On this morning's Meet The Press, Tim Russert tried to pass off the editorial in the "Army Times" and sister publications calling for Donald Rumsfeld's noggin as having some special significance. RNCC Chairman Tom Reynolds didn't let him get away with it. Reynolds exposed those so-called "military newspapers" as nothing more than cogs in the Gannett chain, a member-in-good-standing of the MSM whose flagship paper is the reliably-liberal USA Today.
Russert flashed the panel of the editorial shown here, and asked Reynolds:

"Do you believe it would be helpful [to have] a change at the top of the Pentagon?"
That's when Reynolds unleashed this salvo:
"First of all, the Army Times editorial is written by its Gannett-owned newspaper, which is well-positioned [on the 'anti' side] in other editorial comment relative to the war. And so the editorial writers may be coming from Virginia rather from the military, particularly because it's owned by Gannett."

There is no content to these calls. Who do they want, instead? Do they like Ashley Wilkes who want to talk to Syria and Iran? What does he want to say, anyway? Hi!
He looks like he hasn't showered, his eyes are swollen from lack of sleep or water and his hair looks dirty and uncombed.
His clothing even seems like it was picked up off the floor and worn.
The contrast between his guests and himself is startling.

I didn't know that Hitchens' appearance was likewise.
"They are now part of the Gannett Group (USAToday) and the writers for these four “military papers” also work at USAToday!"
The editorials carry as much weight as a similar editorial would in the New York Times.

I don't like Rumsfeld, but this stunt is a part of the most partisan, coordinated effort to influence an election ever undertaken by the American media. All of the usual suspects have joined arms to lie, distort, cajole, and incite the American public to turn out the hated Republicans.
They may succeed (in this election), but I think that in the long term they have committed collective hari kari. I certainly will never again buy a copy of the Army Times or USA Today.
I don't know how many other military people will respond as you have, but I must say that Gannet seems to be taking a suicidal risk to their profits for the sake of what will probably be a very minor political gain for the Democrats. I hope they suffer the consequences they deserve for pulling a blatant stunt like this.
Maybe the military needs to find some other way of announcing promotions and similar matters of interest, instead of releasing them through these newspapers. They are attempting to violate the principle of keeping politics out of the military, and they have violated, in perception if not actuality, the constitutional principle of civilian leadership of the military.

The writers for those military publications are exactly like those for the NYT and Washington Post. They come from the same backgrounds.
The wife of a young man I know, (also knew her) got a three year assignment to an important country, where she is writing for the Stars and Stripes. They are both hard, hard leftwing, DU types.

You have hit the nail on the head. I bought the paper for years in order to see promotion lists, school lists, pay charts; and those inside baseball stories that you couldn't find anywhere else.
But now, all services have a restricted intranet site that posts promotion lists, etc. on the day of release. Ditto with their web site and public releases. You don't have to wait for the Army Times anymore. There is little reason to buy the paper. And now that they have sold out and become a political shill, I think their fortunes are about to go south.
