Iraq court begins Saddam verdict
BBC ^ | November 6, 2006

Posted on 11/05/2006 12:33:24 AM PST by Jedi Master Pikachu

A court in Baghdad has begun its session to deliver the verdict in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity.

Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants were charged with killing 148 villagers in the mostly Shia town of Dujail.

If found guilty, Saddam could be sentenced to death.

A total curfew was imposed on Baghdad and two other provinces ahead of the verdict, amid fears of a violent reaction from Saddam's supporters.

Saddam, half brother sentenced to death
Yahoo News (AP) ^ | November 5, 2006 | Staff

Posted on 11/05/2006 1:32:50 AM PST by John Carey

Saddam Hussein and his half brother were convicted and sentenced Sunday to death by hanging for war crimes in the 1982 killings of 148 people in the town of Dujail, as the visibly shaken former leader shouted "God is great!"

After the verdict was read, a trembling Saddam yelled out, "Life for the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"

In addition to the former Iraqi dictator and Barzan Ibrahim, his half brother, the Iraqi High Tribunal convicted and sentenced Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the head of Iraq's former Revolutionary Court, to death by hanging. Iraq's former Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Three other co-defendants were convicted of murder and torture and sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

One defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence.

Huzzah!

Too bad this news isn't followed by:

"The hangings will be held at dawn".

The world can't be rid of these monsters too soon. Every day they are allowed to breathe, their continued presence brings hope and purpose to the thugs that have and continue to support them.

Isn't it ironic how Saddam is yelping "long live the people of Iraq" when he himself killed more Iraqis than anyone else?

There is gunfire...unsure how much is celebratory (but grinning...I bet a lot of it is by celebrants).

I hear you.

Once the sentences are carried out, the business of the country healing may start in earnest in all parts of Iraq.

I would like to remind everyone that this verdict was purchased at the cost of over 2,000 American lives.

Let us all take a moment to thank God above that we live in in a country which is blessed by the Almighty with the ability to produce such people.

Soon in Iraq there will be celebratory gunfire. Then there will come the inevitable reprisals against those who dared to stand up against this cheap thug who fancied himself God. Many of the people involved in bringing him to justice will soon pay for their courage with their very lives.

It will be left to us who are left here to remember those who have paid and will pay the ultimate price for simple human freedom and dignity.

Do not forget those who have sacrificed and those who are still sacrificing for this.

Were it not for one American Saddam would still be in power. He and his band of thugs would still be terrorizing, torturing, raping, and killing his own people in order to keep themselves in power.

Were it not for the courage of one single person, Iraqis would still be cowering in fear of this man Hussein. When most of the 'civilized' world and indeed many in his own country were against him this one man knew what needed to be done.

He knew that he was taking a terrible risk. He knew that he was going to be vilified, slandered, and mocked. Yet in spite of all this he chose to go ahead and do the right thing. He wagered the blood and treasure of the mightiest Nation the world had ever seen against the power of this evil punk and he prevailed.

History will judge this man kindly no matter what happens next week.

The man I write of is our President, George Bush.

Never before in the history of mankind has such an evil tyrant been deposed from power so easily. I do not say that lightly. Every single American who gave his or her life over there is a jewel beyond price. But the lives saved are inestimable.

"He who saves one life, saves the World entire".

Our President, George Bush, has saved countless lives with his courage, leadership, and willingness to take decisive action when literally the rest of the world was willing to treat with this cheap, vile, murderous thug.

For this reason alone he deserves a place in History singular to himself.

We can not, we must not, we will not allow this man, our President to lose what he and all of us have fought so hard for next week.

Vote.

Vote like your lives depend on it. Make no mistake about it, your lives and the lives of everyone you hold dear do indeed depend on it.

For no other reason than this, George Bush has earned the right to a majority in both Houses of Congress for the next two years.

Well said, Lurker. Thank you and praise the Lord for all who sacrificed their lives and who are still in harm's way to bring these thugs to justice.

"Saddam Hussein To Hang"
Updated: 09:41, Sunday November 05, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Saddam Hussein will be sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.

Visibly shaken, he shouted: "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Greatest) and "Long live the nation!", pointing defiantly at the judge.

Looking angry, defiant and bitter as the verdict was delivered, he continued to shout "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"

He had earlier refused to stand for the verdict and had to be lifted to his feet by two court bailiffs.

"Make him stand," the judge ordered as the former president stayed seated."

Breaking:

It was just announced by the lead prosecutor in the Saddam trial during the post verdict news conference that legal proceedings against Ramsey Clark for disrupting the court and insulting the judge are being considered.
