Threat Matrix: November 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Wed Nov 08 2006 17:09:48 GMT-0800.

Bangladesh

November 08, 2006

This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Bangladesh to recent events related to the security situation in Bangladesh. American citizens are urged to continue to monitor events closely and remain vigilant with regard to their personal security while in the country. This Public Announcement expires on May 6, 2007.

In late October 2006, political violence erupted in Dhaka and provincial cities, killing approximately 15 people and wounding several hundred. The political opposition successfully shut down the country’s major port in Chittagong, border entry points from India, and major highways leading to Dhaka and Chittagong. All modes of transportation, including rail and river, were temporarily disrupted.

An interim “caretaker” government took office at the end of October to begin preparations for general elections anticipated for January 2007. The two main political parties - the former ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the opposition Awami League – have failed to agree on key modalities for the elections.
Based on experience from elections in 2001, the Embassy expects the situation throughout Bangladesh to remain uncertain through January 2007. During that four-month election cycle, nearly 400 people were reported killed and over 17,000 injured.

Transportation networks and other services may be disrupted by sporadic local or countrywide general strikes (hartals). The Embassy advises all Americans traveling or residing in Bangladesh to keep abreast of developments when planning travel. American citizens in Bangladesh should remain vigilant and avoid large crowds and political demonstrations.

U.S. citizens planning to travel to Bangladesh should consult the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Bangladesh and the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, which are available via the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and (202) 501-4444 from overseas.

U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Bangladesh are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy, where they may obtain updated information on travel and security within Bangladesh. Security updates are e-mailed to all registered Americans with an e-mail address. American citizens may register online at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/. During normal business hours American citizens may call the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka at (880-2) 882-3805; for after-hours emergencies, call (880-2) 885-5500, dial "0" and ask for the duty officer. The fax number of the consular section is (880-2) 882-4449. The U.S. Embassy is located in the diplomatic enclave north of downtown Dhaka, at Madani Avenue, Baridhara, Dhaka 1212. The Embassy's workweek is Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The American Citizens Services (ACS) unit is open to the public from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Sunday through Thursday, except for American and most local holidays.

Footage from his reconnaissance in New York was discovered concealed within a video of Bruce Willis' movie

Well that's interesting. I wonder how he did that and I wonder how much evidence of this nature has been missed. Probably quite a bit. Thanks MamaD.

Venezuela is providing support--including identity documents--that could prove useful to radical Islamic groups, say U.S. officials. U.S. News has learned that Chavez's government has issued thousands of cedulas, the equivalent of Social Security cards, to people from places such as Cuba, Colombia, and Middle Eastern nations that play host to foreign terrorist organizations. An American official with firsthand knowledge of the ID scheme has seen computer spreadsheets with names of people organized by nationality. "The list easily totaled several thousand," the official says. "Colombians were the largest group; there were more than a thousand of them. It also included many from Middle Eastern `countries of interest' like Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Lebanon."

The official adds: "It was shocking to see how extensive the list was."

U.S. officials believe that the Venezuelan government is issuing the documents to people who should not be getting them and that some of these cedulas were subsequently used to obtain Venezuelan passports and even American visas, which could allow the holder to elude immigration checks and enter the United States. U.S. officials say that the cedulas are also being used by Colombian subversives and by some Venezuelan officials to travel surreptitiously.

The suspicious links between Venezuela and Islamic radicalism are multiplying.

American law enforcement and intelligence officials are exploring whether there is an al Qaeda connection--specifically, they want to know if a Venezuelan of Arab descent named Hakim Mamad al Diab Fatah had ties to any of the September 11 hijackers. The United States deported Diab Fatah to Venezuela for immigration violations in March 2002. A U.S. intelligence official says that Diab Fatah is still a "person of interest" and that his family in Venezuela is "a well-known clan associated with extremist and illicit activity" in northern Venezuela.

But when U.S. officials sought Diab Fatah for further questioning, they were told by Venezuelan officials that he was not in the country. Diab Fatah may also be tied to the Caracas mosque of Sheik Ibrahim bin Abdul Aziz, which has caught investigators' attention. One of the mosque's officials, also a Venezuelan of Arab descent, was recently arrested in London for carrying a grenade on a Caracas-London flight.

Egypt’s police finds more explosives in Sinai
7 November 2006

ISMAILIA, Egypt - Egyptian police seized 250 kg (550 lb) of explosives destined for smuggling into the Palestinian territories, police officials said on Tuesday.

They said the explosives were hidden in four big plastic sacks in the Rafah area near Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip.

Three men were spotted next to the explosives and ran away towards the Sinai peninsula once they saw police approaching, said the officials, speaking on a customary condition of anonymity.

Philippine troops seize al-Qaida explosives
Nov. 7, 2006

Philippine troops on Tuesday seized explosive chemicals that were allegedly to be used by al-Qaida-linked Muslim terrorists in planned bomb attacks in the country's troubled south, the military said. The chemicals, consisting of 125 kilos of ammonium nitrate, were seized aboard a truck that passed by a military checkpoint in the coastal village of Rio Hondo in Zamboanga City, 875 kilometres south of Manila, according to Major Eugene Batara.

The truck driver, identified as Jasimin Sahid, was detained for interrogation. The seizure brought to more than 900 kilos the total amount of ammonium nitrate confiscated in Zamboanga City since October.

Jihadi Forums Tune into History Channel for Counter-Terrorism Intelligence

Recent chatter on jihadi websites has focused on monitoring the counter-terrorism strategies of the United States and its allies in the global war on terrorism. Jihadi websites and forums are studying and translating the texts of Western analysts who assess current counter-terrorism efforts. The jihadis use these self-critiques by Western analysts to find areas of weakness and tension in U.S.-led counter-terrorism strategy; through this information, they are better able to devise physical and psychological operations to exploit these weaknesses.

Additionally, their monitoring of U.S.-led counter-terrorism efforts is an attempt to lift the morale of jihadis by: showing that vulnerable points in the U.S.-led terrorism coalition exist; disseminating false analysis on the plans and intentions of those states allied against the mujahideen; and publicizing artificial casualty accounts of these states, especially those of the U.S. military.

Belgium to create imam school
Nov. 8, 2006 at 8:27PM

Belgium plans to set up a school for imams by the end of the academic year to offer civic training to the Muslim spiritual leaders. The school, requested by the Muslim Executive in Belgium, will be run by a mufti, an Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law. The mufti will not be allowed to issue any fatawa -- which would normally be one of his privileges -- because such decrees would violate Belgian law, the government said.

A similar structure exists in France, the Expatica news service reports. A Belgian professor will give civic training in both French and Dutch, and 15 trainers from Morocco, Turkey and Egypt will give training in Arabic, Turkish and Urdu, the national language of Pakistan. The school will be subsidized by the Belgian government, which seeks to control the foreign financing of Belgian mosques to reduce outside ideological influences on Belgian imams.

The reason for 39-year old PC Amjad Farooq being removed from the Diplomatic Protection Group (SO16 or DPG) is that he was considered a security risk.

I'm sure there are those who will disagree, but I think this is a good thing. While Ahmadinejad might indeed be a "terrorist" he is also the leader of a powerful state, and we need to do whatever is necessary to try to keep him from having the bomb.

Government Officials And Muslim Teens Meet At Taping Of Talk Show
November 06, 2006

Muslim students put FBI and immigration officials on the hot seat Sunday at a taping in Queens of a well known Pakistani talk show. NY1 Criminal Justice reporter Solana Pyne was there as a panel answered questions about everything from FBI training to the success of the war on terror.

An unusual gathering even for a place as diverse as Queens, as a well known Pakistani talk show host taped a program to bring back home. "There is an important question, what is the outcome of this war on terror after five years,” asked talk-show host Hamid Mir.

A room full of students asked questions. “Are FBI agents or other government officials trained, or getting trained to learn more about Islam?” asked one student in attendance. Answering them was a member of parliament from the United Kingdom, a local imam, Muslim academics from both coasts, as well as the head of the New York office for Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, and an FBI special agent.

“FBI Agents can't all look like me,” said FBI special agent, Andrew Arena. “They can't all be white guys. We have got to diversify and that's very, very important. We train our agents from day one in the academy to understand the Muslim faith.”

Spanish Enclaves 'Targeted By Al-Qaeda'

Madrid, 6 Nov. (AKI) - International terror network al-Qaeda is setting its sights on Spain's enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the north African coast - both with significant Muslim populations - according to leading Spanish daily El Pais, quoting unnamed intelligence sources who have unearthed a Jihadist document on an Islamic extremist website.

Signed with the codename Nadim al-Magrebi, the message warns of a "Holy war against the infidel Spanish state which has occupied the two cities." It invites Islamic fundamentalists to form "a strong Jihadist group whose objective is not just one or two operations but a declaration of long-term war."

Islamic Cyber Rogues Threaten Vatican Site

Dubai, 8 Nov. (AKI) - Muslim hackers allegedly supporting al-Qaeda have announced - for the second time in a month - a planned attack on the Vatican's official website. The assault has been planned by Islamist cyber-rogues for Thursday 9 November at 12 am Mecca time (10 am in Italy).

The announcement was made on Wednesday through the creation of an ad hoc site where hackers can download programmes to start the internet attack. "The leadership of the electronic Jihad has decided to undertake a grand attack against the official Vatican site following the insults by the Pope against our Prophet," read a statement.

We don't negotiate with terrorists.

Ahmadinejad is a liar and propagandist.
The mad mullahs have an agenda, too.
We don't negotiate with these guys, either
or do we?

I could be wrong and my common sense
thinking could be a thing of the past.

Time will tell.
