Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

In retrospect, perhaps it's too bad he didn't say something this time.

"Islamist Websites Monitor No. 19"
Islamist Video Featuring Al-Qaeda Member Abu Yahya Al-Liby

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On November 2, 2006, Islamist websites posted an 18-minute video (http://switch3.castup.net/cunet/gm.asp?ai=214&ar=m4-015wmv&ak=null ) titled "Combat Not Compromise." In it, Abu Yahya Al-Liby, one of four Al-Qaeda members who escaped from an American prison in Baghram, Afghanistan in July 2005, eulogized Farouq Al-Iraqi, another of the escapees who was later killed in Iraq. In the film, Al-Liby went on to urge the mujahideen not to lose hope but to be patient and to join forces, and called on the Muslim 'ulama to join the ranks of jihad. The film, with English subtitles, was produced by the Al-Qaeda production company Al-Sahab."

"As-Sahab Releases 'Jihad Poems of Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi'"
By Nick Grace
September 17, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "As-Sahab, al Qaeda's media propaganda unit, today released a new 23-minute video on radical message boards called "Jihad Poems of Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi" that features Mohammad Hassan (alias Abu Yahya al-Libi), an al Qaeda fighter originally from Libya who escaped from Bagram prison in July 2005. He appears wearing a suicide vest as he reads handwritten notes in front of at least 14 al Qaeda militants, some of which clutch kalashnikovs. During the introduction of the video the crowd fires the weapons into the air.

This is the fourth known video to feature al-Libi. Previous as-Sahab videos that include him include a sermon in celebration of Eid, a eulogy to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and an interview about his imprisonment and escape from Bagram. Unlike most of as-Sahab's recent video products, this new video is not subtitled in English.

An animated gif banner was posted in advance on the Ekhlaas Forum, the main portal for al Qaeda messaging, on Friday, September 15."

Iraqi Security Forces Continue Security in Fallujah, Nab Insurgents

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2006 – Iraqi security forces searched the Fallujah general hospital yesterday as part of their continuous operations to maintain the security and safety of the citizens of Fallujah. Elsewhere, Iraqi and coalition forces have captured dozens of insurgents in recent days.
The hospital was searched after intelligence indicated it was being used as a potential safe haven for insurgents. The Iraqi troops with support from coalition forces entered the hospital to ensure that the facility continues to be a safe place for the people of Fallujah to receive medical treatment, U.S. officials said.

No insurgent activity was uncovered. The hospital staff and patients cooperated with the Iraqi security forces. The visit was completed without incident, officials said.

Elsewhere, Iraqi army and coalition troops from Multinational Division Baghdad detained 17 terrorists around 9 p.m. Nov. 6 in central Baghdad. The soldiers, from 5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and the U.S. Army’s 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, conducted a combined cordon-and-search operation in the Karkh neighborhood to capture members of a suspected death squad.

The soldiers apprehended 17 suspects, all identified by witnesses as members of a death squad operating in central Baghdad. Neither injuries to Iraqi or coalition personnel nor damage to their equipment were reported.

Over the previous weekend, Iraqi army and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained 24 suspected terrorists in Baghdad. Iraqi and U.S. soldiers detained 23 suspected terrorists Nov. 5 for suspected involvement with death squads and setting up illegal checkpoints.

In a separate incident a day earlier, U.S. soldiers from 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team detained a suspected terrorist around 10:15 a.m. after discovering a weapons cache underneath the Al Hibna electrical substation in Kadhamiyah, a neighborhood in northern Baghdad. The cache contained four mortar rounds, a 60 mm mortar tube, a G3 handgun, three G3 magazines, an RPK machinegun, a PKC assault rifle, two AK-47 assault rifle, about 3,000 7.62 mm rounds of ammunition, and four grenade fuses. The suspect was held for further questioning.

At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, two individuals protested against torture in Iraq. After being questioned by the police, the individuals returned and verbally threatened Americans, stating that Americans both in Cyprus and around the world would be harmed if anything happened to Saddam Hussein. This incident occurred one day before Hussein was scheduled to be sentenced for war crimes. RSO Nicosia notified the Cypriot police, and no further incidents occurred after Hussein's sentencing was announced.

"Tibi rejoices at Republican losses"
By GIL HOFFMAN

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Republican Party's loss of control over the US House of Representatives was good news for United Arab List MK Ahmed Tibi, who praised Americans on Wednesday for voting against the party of US President George W. Bush.

Tibi was one of several MKs who reacted to the American election that could have a significant impact on the future of US policy in the Middle East.

US: Democrats take control of House

"Bush's policies are anti-Arab, anti-Islamic and anti-Palestinian and encourage terror around the world and the way the neo-conservatives related to the Arab world was outrageous and humiliating, so I am happy to see [the Republicans] lose the election," Tibi told The Jerusalem Post.

By contrast, National Union leader Benny Elon said that had he been American, he would have voted Republican."
