The Washington Post is trying to salvage the campaign of its hand-picked candidate.

I am quite unhappy with the Allen campaign using books to attack Webb. It politicizes writing. Newt Gingrich, Scooter Libby and Lynne Cheney have all put rather bizarre sex scenes in their books, and to take just the disturbing parts and isolate them from the rest of the book is disingenious.
Frankly I have read "Fields of Fire" and liked it very much, and my vietnam vet uncle is a very big fan of Webb's writing.
Allen should hit Webb on the issues, instead of going after his writing

he talks as if Allen wrote the books - and claimed Webb wrote them.
Mr Webb - YOU WROTE THIS STUFF.

How is pointing out Webb's own words an Allen campaign "smear tactic?" If I write a post, and later another FReeper quotes my words back at me, that is not a smear. Those were my own words and I am responsible for them.
If Webb believes what he wrote was perfectly okay, he should stop screaming like a vampire exposed to light. If he doesn't think his words were okay, he needs to disavow them and apologize. So which is it?
Webb, like a typical Democrat, is trying to have it both ways.

I don't see any "defense" of the passage in which an adult male puts the penis of a small boy in his mouth in that excerpt of the WaPoo article.
All I see there is an attack on the messenger.
Meanwhile I don't recall him ever coming to Foley's defense when he was wrongly accused of being a child molester and hounded out of office by a partisan coordinated campaign together with the media. Stuff it, crybaby.

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate James Webb yesterday delivered his strongest criticism of incumbent Sen. George Allen of the fall campaign, vigorously defending himself against Allen's charges that he wrote sex-laced passages in his fiction novels.
Yeah. He said that all of these scenes were necessary for the flow of the plot. However, I cannot imagine even one single plot whose flow is predicated on pedophilic fellatio.
He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaign, who released excerpts Thursday from Webb's novels to the Drudge Report Web site and said the writings were lurid and inappropriate for a man seeking to serve in the Senate.
"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said, referring to his belief that Allen (R) is responsible for his campaign staff's tactics and has now shown his true character. "Our government should no longer be in the hands of a group of unprincipled, small-minded, power-hungry character assassins."
Of course, Webb is also referring to a certain Virginia Senatorial Campaign that (falsely) accused Senator Allen of racism, right?
We Virginians know the truth behind that one and Webb cannot get away from it. He rang that bell too loudly.

The Washington Post can accept some of the blame for the Allen attack. Allen has every right to do what he has done, particularly since he has been under a daily barrage from the Post, beginning with that silly flap over the Macaca remark. That suddenly became a fatal sin in the democrat loving eyes of the Post. Then the endorsement where they saw him totally differently than most Virginians. I accidentally typed in moist Virginians, but I guess those would be the titillated Webb supporters that includes the non Virginian Washington Post.

He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaignWhat smear tactics? This guy writes a bunch of filth and that calls it a low blow when Allen points it out.
Hey Webb, that filth came out of YOUR mind, not Allens.
