Bloomberg Assails N.R.A. and Supports Lieberman

CHICAGO, Oct. 25 — Raising his oratory against illegal guns, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg sharply assailed the National Rifle Association on Wednesday during a visit here that also included a fund-raiser for the re-election campaign of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut.

Mr. Bloomberg joined Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago at a news conference to promote a gathering of officials from 22 Midwest cities who are to discuss gun-control strategies on Thursday. Similar meetings are scheduled in Boston on Nov. 9 and Atlanta on Nov. 30.

The Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, which Mr. Bloomberg and Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston began with a meeting at Gracie Mansion in April, has grown to 109 mayors in 44 states — surpassing the goal of 50 mayors by the end of the year. But none of the officials, including the mayors of Milwaukee; Tulsa, Okla.; and Rockford and Palatine, Ill., who attended the news conference, on Wednesday at the Chicago Police Department, said they were close to success.

“Congress has not been an ally of those who favor common-sense gun legislation,” Mr. Daley said. “In fact we’ve had to work hard just to keep Congress from making things worse.”

Mr. Daley, in office since 1989 and the scion of a Democratic dynasty, and Mr. Bloomberg, a Republican who took office in 2002, portrayed support for gun control as a bipartisan issue and focused their ire on Washington.

“We have to make these politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, understand that the gun lobby does not speak for the vast majority of Americans, including those who own their own guns,” Mr. Daley said.

Mr. Bloomberg used the event to level some of his harshest comments ever at the National Rifle Association.

“The N.R.A. is just, plain and simple, out to stop anything...”

“Congress has not been an ally of those who favor common-sense gun legislation,” Mr. Daley said.

This from the man who when asked about a proposed ban on cell phones in cars said, "Well I think everybody should keep at least two hands on the wheel."

'The Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition'

Does this imply that if your mayor isn't part of this coalition, that your mayor is FOR illegal guns?

It's a little odd that around here, down in Florida, there just ain't no big cities calling for more gun control. In fact, concealed-carry is well established, and allowed firearm usage in self-defence has been expanded!

Kinda makes sense..........FRegards

Please, Mr. Daley, with all of Chicago's great gun control laws, explain to me why Chicago's crime statistics are so dismal?

Of all the stupid things Mr. Daley has said in the past, this is one of the stupidest.

Bloomy is an insignificant tic-turd. A life-long Democrat, he became a "Republican" in the post 9-11 era to capitalize on Mayor Guiliani's popularity. Bloomy is an ass-bag and not likely to get Dems around here to vote for him, much less Republicans.

"Bloomberg won't even run. It would be a joke if he did".

It is disgusting that he is allowed to call himself a Republican, in the first place. It makes a mockery out of the idea that principles are involved, in any way. With just a few more Foleys and Bloombergs, we sure won't need any liberals.

I agree. I support many of the less-conservative Republicans, but Bloomberg is way over the top. I can think of a few democrats who I would vote for before I voted for Bloomberg. With that said, I cannot even imagine him trying to get the nomination.

Imagine where the party might be today, had not some of us refused to compromise!
Don't know about anyone else, but, I'm still refusing!
A liberal is a liberal, no matter what they call themselves, ____ them, and the horse they rode in on!

Mr. Bloomberg, the NRA certainly speaks for me.

For that matter, I think that we should repeal the 1968 GCA and the 1934 NFA.
