How Disturbing (McCaskill/Talent Race turns nasty - thank you Michael J. Fox)
Red State ^ | 10/23/06 | Erick Posted

The race in Missouri between Jim Talent and Claire McCaskill took a disturbing turn last night. In the St. Louis market during the World Series, Michael J. Fox shot an ad on behalf of Claire McCaskill on the sole issue of stem cells.

The ad, which will probably now embolden the cut and run conservatives to run in droves to the polls, was both exploitative and manipulative.

The ad was perhaps too clever for McCaskill. It is an issue seen by many voters as being personal and non-political. Yet, McCaskill and the left have repeatedly pulled the issue into gutter politics and exploited the hopes and fears of many. This is just the latest example of the exploitation of life at the hands of the Democrats.

While there may be some momentary benefit for McCaskill, my sense is that voters who might have wanted to stay home and protest the GOP will become enraged enough to go vote and other voters will feel dirty enough from viewing the ad to vote against McCaskill. Sometimes emotional ads are just too raw for voters. This is one of those times.

I was born in St Louis and I hate when people do that or call St Louis, St Louie. If you are from there, it seems rather condescending. If you are from there, it just seems dumb.

Just in case any FReeper needs to be reminded, the debate over the use of Embryonic Stem Cells is a 'ginned up controversy, created by the Pro-Choicers who were getting tired of having their butts kicked over Partial Birth Abortion. They accurately concluded that they would benefit greatly if they could move the debate to the opposite end of the gestational spectrum. But nobody actually gives a damn about Embryonic Stem Cells. It's all about Abortion, and always has been.

You're exactly right. This has always been about trying to destroy the pro-life movement.

Unless you have a family member with Parkinsons.

Lighten up, Francis!

He was great on Spin City.

Not since then.

Still, my heart goes out to him...I can't imagine what he is going through, and it is hard to get mad at him.

He's an opportunist who uses his nationality when it suits him. In this case, he's forsaken his nationality for the sake of influence, pure and simple. He's a good actor, an actor remember, who is using his skills and dialogue which may or may not be accurate to sway an election with which he has absolutely no 'dog in that hunt' (the particular election he's advertising for). I used to like him, but I don't any more.

I didn't watch the game but if it's the one I recently saw of him, I had a real problem with it. Fox was shaking like crazy, and I think he over did it. I believe he added to the shakes. I recently saw him on a TV program and he wasn't shaking at all. I think he's just doing it to gain sympathy so people will vote for Claire McCaskill. He is; after all, a Hollyweirdo actor, and that's what Hollyweirdos do.....they act!

I got dizzy watching Michael J. Fox bouncing all over the screen. It's weird, he didn't do that on "Boston Legal".

I'm so glad you posted this. I saw him on "Boston Legal" too and I didn't notice him shaking. He added to the shakes to make people feel sorry for him, but it was obvious to me that it was phony. I honestly think he did it with the sole purpose, and that was to help McCaskill. He should be ashamed of himself, but of course being a Hollyweirdo actor, he has no shame.

Do you think he deliberately played up the palsy for this ad?

Yes, I do! I saw him on "Boston Legal" too, and he wasn't shaking. I know you didn't ask me, but I just wanted to confirm what the other poster said. :)

MJF is working to find cures for Parkinson's wherever that takes him

Good for him. He can search for cures without resorting to strawman arguments & ad-hominem attacks that masks the real agenda.

---"Disgusting campaign ad for Crazy Claire"---

Yes, but my concern is: did it work?

Outside of RedState, I have not heard anyone suggest the ad will backfire. Most of what I have heard is that the ad is/was effective.

We can all yell, "shame, shame!" until the cows come home. But we'd better be prepared for the fact that Freeper and RedState folks aren't exactly unbiased pollsters. If it swayed even 1%, it may be another lost seat.

And the GOP's ad blitz during the Super Bowl is what, exactly?

Likely lame, recycled ads already used 1000 times.

That's what worries me.

Hearing a bunch of Freepers and RedStaters tell me "oooooh, this will make Conservatives come out even more" after every Democrat dirty trick and advertisement is hardly comforting.

Right now, the GOP is doing nothing creative. Every ad is the same and reprinted with a different candidate's name:

-Democrat X supports amnesty.
-Democrat X will raise your taxes.
-The stakes are high, and Democrats will plant the white flag of surreneder on the soils of Iraq in the first 100 days.

Meanwhile, with everyone in Missouri watching, Michael J. Fox tells a flat-out and uncontested lie about Jim Talent in an heart-tugging ad for Crazy Claire. Any takers on my bet that the GOP simply doesn't respond? How about Charlton Heston coming on in a brief ad explaining the truths of SCR and talking about his disease?

No, expect more recycled ads. I'm surprised they haven't accidentally run ads for the wrong Republican in some of these races, mixing them up because they are so similar except for the names.

But I suppose we're all supposed to be counting on the "this'll really, really, really, really, really, really, really bring back the cut-and-run Conservatives" memes. Yeah, right. They were just one Democrat ad away from changing their ENTIRE minds about this election.

Here's an idea: how about some effective ads?

Oh, but I ask too much.............

I would like to see JUST ONE AD in Missouri, where Heston (or someone from the NRA) tells Missourians that...

MCCASKILL WILL TAKE YOUR GUNS!!!

What is the REAL agenda MR. Extremist? And you know this how because Rush told you or because someone that you were channelling from Alpha Zeta told you? MJF agenda is Parkinsons pure and simple. He has devoted this part of his life to his foundation. You may not like him trying to work the system but I dont see you objecting to doing the same for tax breaks or social security reform or any of a number of conservative agenda items. Face it, you're just pissed that McCaskill got an effective spokesperson for an issue to which she is aligned. Talent better quit bitching about nursing home audits and get to discussing important issues in this campaign or he's going to lose it.

Let me get this straight:

the author believes that this ad will make GOP voters who were "protesting" against the GOP, now go to the polls and vote against the Democratic candidate, thereby giving Talent their vote against their will?

Whose crazier? Michael J. Fox, or this author?
