WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.

Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.

"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.

Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.

The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.

West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.

"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

This country and it's insane political correct leadership is going to keep on playing with this death cult till it gets exactly what it's asking for.

I would ask that God have mercy on our country but I'm afraid it would just add insult to injury since our country has slammed the door in His face and only opens it occasionally to spit in it.

Our country is already under judgment, our leaders are already being given over to a reprobate mind.

God will not be mocked.

May He have mercy on those few of us who still believe in His Son.

I don't "get you" because I don't recognize any logical connection...

Therein lies your problem.

Hopefully, one of these days, recognition will come.

I suppose you have noted that we have been losing alot of our freedoms in the US. Political correctness being the biggest culprit for the loss. Muslim immigration is leading to the death of Europe (as we know it) and those socialists countries will be inhabitable by anyone not of one particular faith. They can't even make cartoons or videos critical of anything Muslim and the cars keep burning in Paris. Canada is also having grave problems, as is Asia and Africa. Everywhere in the world, Muslims are the problem. Christian Arabs are not a problem unless they live in the middle east where they just get killed.

You asking for legal justification for not keeping Islamics in the US military is like putting the cart before the horse.

They should be kept out until such time that it is determined to what extent Islam is compatible with a non-Islamic government.

Europe and the UK are just now entering this debate. Apparently the US (at least the military)hasn't even considered it yet.

Any religion that has a political program involving its’ seizure of power in its’ source documents is not a religion but a political party, and if this political program includes overthrow of the existing legal civil entity as is the Koranic teaching, it can legitimately be banned under our US Constitution.

"Would you have had the USMA educate Nazis in the 40s?"

No. It wasn't legal to be a Nazi in the US military in the 40's. It is currently legal to be a muslim in the US military

It is not often that I post merely to give support to fellow poster. However, I find your views on this subject to be crisp and refreshing when compared to the ideological extremes that are all too common to these threads.

I can't speak for Europe -- but for some reason, NYC is able to largely absorb and intergrate them just as it's been absorbing and intergreating immigrants for three hundred years or more. That's not to say there aren't lunatics out there.

However, what is interesting, of course, is that NYC has very large populations of both Jews and Muslims compacted into a relatively small geographic area and there is no fighting in the street...

"32 mohammedans at West Point is a much greater security risk than those folks with financial problems."

Support that with some data. One of the primary means of compromising a person's security clearance is to bribe them with money. This is even more true when the target is experiencing or is close to bankruptcy. And with regard to violating security clearances, we've had far more problems with Jewish Americans providing data to Israel than any other ethnic or religious group I'm aware of. I think it would be an absolutely terrible idea to ban Jews from our military.

Ban Southerners from the military, they rose up en masse against the U.S. government! And I've seen Confederate flags all over the South. I think they're planning something....

"Now legal, well that's quite another matter as these days in America what is legal and what is rational don't always match."

Holy smokes. 248 posts into the thread someone actually states there is no legal justification. Good on you. And since the United States Military must comply with United States law, until we the people change the law, Muslims will be allowed to attend and worship at West Point. End of issue.

I agree with you that we should not make war on all of Islam but we should attempt to change Islam.

Democracy in Iraq will force Sharia law to not be implemented in Iraq this forces 'true Islam' to change.

There are some with in Islam that wants to see a more secular Islam.
But if you just look at this statistic it shows you there are not many:
“Approval of attacks on US-Led Forces in Iraq 61% With 47% in January this year.”

"What about followers of one of the countless Imams?"

Too broad. There are some "Christian" leaders who rival Calypso Louie on the sanity index. We are not at a point where we can ask applicants the name of their priest, imam, wiccan grand master....

"Their RELIGION is the problem. Have you read the Koran?"

No argument, and yes. Nevertheless, not all followers of Islam are Jihadists. Most barely follow any of it at all. I asked a Muslim student on the Air Force Academy what Ramadan was celebrating. He didn't know. I kid you not. He's an 18 year old kid from Queen's New York. And apparently some freepers worst nightmare.

The muslim crapper can't face East...so, they'd be OK to kneel in front of it because they'd always be on target....naww, that's not right, whatever...

Given the data you've posted on USMA-educated officers who defected to the CSA, I think maybe we ought to just shut the whole thing down. The appointment process is obviously very broken. The Army can fulfill its officer needs through the ROTC program.

Hey, there's a thought. Wouldn't Al Qaeda sleepers get their commissions through ROTC or OCS instead of the much more exclusive Hudson High? They could learn whatever black magic you get in officers' school -- I think it's something about reading maps and memorizing creeds -- and still have time to attend speeches by inflamatory imams, oppress women, whatever these people like to do. And a ROTC-minted lieutenant is pretty much the same creature as a USMA-minted lieutenant.

If I were a seventeen-year-old muj seeking a position within the US Army from which I could betray and destroy kuffir, I'd enroll in some nice state school, party every weekend, get a humanities degree (classics), then do the college op thing. Heck, that's what I'd do if I were seventeen regardless of my religion and any jihadist tendencies or lack of same. Hindsight is 20/20.

You are an encyclopedia of information pertaining to Islam. I had no idea that most muslims didn't know what Ramadan was.

If there are 32 muslims in West Point, then it is highly likely that we have hundreds in our other military academies and ROTC programs.

"The point is that legal types like yourself always look at everything from a legal perspective"

Ha. I spent 15 years of my military career flying fighters including multiple tours in the Middle East bombing radical islamists. I have absolutely zero affection for them. But during that time I've also served with Americans who were muslim and have never, not once seen them act in anyway that would bring discredit to this country or its military. "Legal types" like myself happen to operate under the rule of law. We fight to defend it, and we fight for the rights of American's to change laws they don't like. It's a simple concept really. That's why it works.

And I really can't believe you are still arguing about nuclear stuff. Here's a hint...Dr. Strangelove was not a documentary. Most of our nuclear secrets were compromised by Caucasian Jews. Again, as a staunch supporter of Israel and Jews in general, I would never demand we deny them access to our military or its secrets.
