"GOP sources said Mr. Gingrich will most likely not run for president in 2008. But they said he would seek to represent the conservative wing of the party, the endorsement of which would be regarded as crucial for any GOP nominee."
It appears that Newt is seeking to be a king maker, rather than a king. (The brains behind the throne?)

Too bad the Pubs weaseled out of most of it.

Any Republican who complained about Clinton's marital failures and thinks Newts are no big deal is a hypocrite.

"Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has quietly positioned himself for a comeback to head the Republican Party as early as 2008." Quietly? I don't think so...he has been on talks shows nearly every day and night since the 2004 elections. He senses that the conservatives are getting restless and will not vote for a non-conservative in 2008.

I think Newt is a good think tank guy.
I don't see him as a major leader anymore. I like to see him occasionally on TV but too much of him and he comes across as a blow hard.
To: rob777
I have no problem with his efforts. In fact name another conservative that should/ can carry the mantle? Our bench is weak and our players are Rinos. For all his faults I cannot think of another man that understands the stakes at hand and would wake up everyday asking himself the same questions we ask ourselves daily.
Can anyone name a better alternative? Are their any head banging Conservatives out there?

I'm not sold even though Newt is my former Congressman.
He's got that disloyalty character flaw that scares me to ever vote for him again.

Newt is damaged goods. If he ever decides to run again, the Dims will drag his resignation out of the closet and he'll be toast.

Newt WAS a great LEADER, but he has ruined himself with his runaway zipper....it would be SUICIDE to have him as THE Kingmaker!!
To: rob777
Newt really has a rather large ego problem.
I generally think his ideas are good, but his ego is way out of control.

Gingrich and McCain are peas in a pod, in my book.
I wouldn't put it past either one of them to play Perot in '08 in order to hand the election to the Clintons.

President Newt
Somehow, I don't think so. Although, his crazy ol' mom would provide endless entertainment, a la Lillian Carter.

Newt is a brillant statesman with a nack for the formulation/explanation of conservative ideals into a concise forum with wide-ranging appeal....wish he had been diligent in keeping his personal house a bit cleaner.
"GOP sources said Mr. Gingrich will most likely not run for president in 2008. But they said he would seek to represent the conservative wing of the party, the endorsement of which would be regarded as crucial for any GOP nominee."
The brains behind the operation may be the best use of Newt's obvious talents. Perhaps he will get the same near god status that often said of Mr. Rove....with liberals often citing his the ability to control the weather, the stock market, and gas prices to influence elections. Often repeated on this site... "Rove you magnificent ______" "Newt, you magnificent ______"
To: rob777
GOOD!!! There is a definate "Leadership Gap" in the national GOP which Newt should be able to fill quite handily. Too bad he has been so quiet for so long.
To: rob777
I am all for that. As President, I really don't think so. A lot of people still see him as a callous SOB. I think he's a brilliant guy and that would be the right role for him. If he could get the steam roller going on pork and immigration that would be wonderful. It's sounds like there are some common sense rumblings out of the White House on the waras of late.

Would be a great VP candidate but I don't know if he would be a good POTUS candidate. I would love to see him run because I think the debates would be about real issues and the nominating process would lean conservative (knocking out Rudy and McCain).
The liberal media would slice him and dice him up if he became the nominee. He has a lot of tough baggage from Congress and the liberals would try to get conservatives to sit on the sidelines the way he divorced his ex.

The party needs to get rid of people like Warner, McCain and that little batam rooster from SC. Lots of wolves running around in sheeps clothing.
