Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has quietly positioned himself for a comeback to head the Republican Party as early as 2008.
GOP sources said Mr. Gingrich does not plan to run for president, but intends to be available as the savior of conservatives dismayed by candidates who seek to move the party to the left in the aftermath of George W. Bushs presidency. Over the last few months, Mr. Gingrich has become the favorite of conservatives and has outlined a new vision for the GOP that seeks for the party to return to the moral clarity of the late President Ronald Reagan.
I believe that whatever the results of the November elections, Newt will become a major force in the GOP for 2008," a senior Republican Party strategist said.
Mr. Gingrich has already become the choice of conservatives and the Christian Right. He has won the Human Events presidential straw poll for September, topping the list for the second month in a row.
The achievement marked a major boost for Mr. Gingrich. For much of 2006, Mr. Gingrich trailed Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican, in the poll, but last month Mr. Gingrich led the House member by 31 to 17 percent.
Among conservatives, Mr. Gingrich is more popular than senior allies of President Bush and members of his administration. In the Human Events poll, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dropped to sixth place with 6.68 percent. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's younger brother, reached 3.37 percent in the presidential straw poll.
GOP sources said Mr. Gingrich decided to raise his profile in 2006, with the publication of a weekly newsletter and the gathering of a brain trust. Over the last few months, he has been campaigning for Republican candidates and commenting on both domestic and foreign issues.
On several issues, Mr. Gingrich has taken positions that differ with that of the administration. While Mr. Bush has urged diplomacy to deal with a nuclear North Korea, Mr. Gingrich has been calling for regime change that echoed the Reagan era and the president's efforts with then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the late Pope John Paul II to undermine the communist regimes in Eastern Europe.
"When you look at a country such as North Korea, you see tremendous poverty," Mr. Gingrich said in a radio interview last week. "You have to believe that there are thousands of people who might want to collaborate with the West. We're remarkably bureaucratic. Rather than work with the North Korean government, we ought to be cooperating with those willing to smuggle food into the country. We have to recognize what a bad dictatorship this is."
GOP sources said Mr. Gingrich will most likely not run for president in 2008. But they said he would seek to represent the conservative wing of the party, the endorsement of which would be regarded as crucial for any GOP nominee.
"It's obvious that in 2008, the party will move away from the Bush era and will be looking for a change in direction," another GOP source said. "I think Newt will be in a position to lay out a strategy that would appeal to both conservatives and old-line Republicans."
NEWT= TOO close to Hitlery
The Clintons evaded and threatened and tried to cover up his sexual issues and the reputation of a young woman staffer was also ruined as well. Newt has had his issues its true but he has covered up nothing, nor has any of his political liabilities been found shot in Fort Marcy park!
So much for hypocrysy!
Hey, he actually had a good excuse, being married to this:
Nope, disagree. Not happening.
Would be a great VP candidate but I don't know if he would be a good POTUS candidate. I would love to see him run because I think the debates would be about real issues and the nominating process would lean conservative (knocking out Rudy and McCain).
The liberal media would slice him and dice him up if he became the nominee. He has a lot of tough baggage from Congress and the liberals would try to get conservatives to sit on the sidelines the way he divorced his ex.
"Do a little reading. Here's a hint: google Callista Bisek"
Nope, sorry. I have no interest whatsoever in Newt's personal romantic life.
The brains behind the operation may be the best use of Newt's obvious talents. Perhaps he will get the same near god status that often said of Mr. Rove....with liberals often citing his the ability to control the weather, the stock market, and gas prices to influence elections. Often repeated on this site... "Rove you magnificent ______" "Newt, you magnificent ______"
That is what I have been thinking. Rove is not as ideologically grounded as Newt.
Would be a great VP candidate but I don't know if he would be a good POTUS candidate.
I see him more in the role Rove is now playing. Newt combines a sense of strategy with an ideological approach more grounded in Reagan conservatism.
Well, that's mighty gentlemanly of you.
I wonder, then, why you enquired about him being called "Runaway Zipper"? Well, I gave you an answer. Perhaps you shouldn't ask questions you don't want the answer to.
"JON KYL FOR ONE."
agreed.
RICK SANTORUM FOR TWO.
Welcome to the 21st Century. I don't think that would make a difference. He cheated on his wife, but married the girl that is different from just using a young girl for a thrill.
I have always thought that Newt is a far better "behind-the-scenes" strategist than "front man." He seemed much more adept as Minority Leader when he formulated the "Contract with America" than he ever did as speaker. Don't get me wrong, this is not in any way a criticism of Newt, it's just an observation of what his strongest assets are.
The party needs to get rid of people like Warner, McCain and that little batam rooster from SC. Lots of wolves running around in sheeps clothing.
OB
I agree, but the Republican party cannot put him out front.
Newt was unable to control his sexual drive when he was Speaker of the House. It is very unlikely that he could control himself at any time in his life.
Anyone who condemned Clinton for his sexual acts and does not condemn Newt for his identical sexual acts is a hypocrite of the first order.
Newt knows he can not be elected. And he is no king maker. He is a disgrace to the morals of the Party and any so called conservative who can support Newt in any role must think cheating on multiple wives is the way to go.
There is no way the religious right could vote for Newt or anyone he supports. Newt is the kiss of death for any candidate. His judgment is very flawed. His advice is bad and his morals are disgusting.
The media likes to put him on the air as a typical republican and he is so disgusting that he is glad to play that role. There is no election that Newt could not lose for the Republicans. He needs to go away and stay away.
Yeah, Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy, William Jefferson and a few other Dims with spotless reputations will toast him up proper. What the hell is this "cleaner than a serpent's tooth" test we apply only to Republicans? Newt's a crucial resource for conservatives.
I condemn Clinton for lieing under oath, not for having an affair. As far as I'm concerned, the later was a private issue between him and his wife, while the former was an impeachable offense.
Anyways, I'd like to see Newt run if only for the real debate that would occur in the Republican Party. People would actually have to discuss conservative ideas. The debate would change from the current tone of "at least we're better than the Democrats."
not true -- every item except for term limits passed the house and everyone except the constitutional amendments were enacted into law in one form or another
