Financial institutions have concerns about how to identify who is legal and who is not
By Timothy Pratt Las Vegas Sun
Members of Nevada's banking community are worried about a proposed ordinance in Pahrump that would make it illegal for them to do business with undocumented immigrants.
"How do I do business in Pahrump with an ordinance like this?" said Bill Martin, president of Nevada State Bank, which has two branches in the fast-growing town an hour's drive west of Las Vegas.
The proposed ordinance, called the "English Language and Patriot Reaffirmation Ordinance," also would make English the town's official language and prohibit flying a foreign flag by itself.

Wells Fargo should be more concerned about a potential RICO suit.
"If they (customers) look Hispanic, do I ID them? Can I profile? I don't think so."
This is such a lame arguement!
If I tried to cash a check at my bank (where I have done business for 20+ years!) they would still ask for identification. The ONLY reason a person would need to rely on the matricula consular is if that person were here illegally.
Just as long as it doesn't affect our "favorite" businesses in Pahrump! wink-wink
Went through Pahrump last year, what a serious crap hole.
Went through Pahrump last year, what a serious crap hole.
Reminds me of Deliverance.
Deliverance was a beautiful water filled area with pathetic folks. Pahrump is sand and rock and on the edge of death valley filled with pathetic folks.
--speak for yourself--some of us like warm desert--
Um...how about with LEGAL residents?
Exactly.
These banks knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to start accepting matriculas rather than an ID issued to legal residents. They are enablers of criminals.
How can someone legally open a bank account -- which will pay interest on which they will owe taxes -- without providing a legal ID and a verified SS or tax ID number ?
Not just warm desert, crappy desert.
Only folks there are folks that can't afford to work and live in Vegas so they drive 40 minutes to this.
Grocery stores with slot machines with indian weman smoking and playing slot machines. GREAT.
Rocks and sand and nothing.
It takes years to grow to appreciate the beauty of the desert, so I can't blame the naive among us who comment on "what a hole" it is when they "pass" through it. I've been traveling there (and elsewhere in SW) frequently over the last 26 years and I didn't come to appreciate until the mid-90s......
ping
They've seen some businesses pick up and leave? Well, what are the chances they were doing too much business with illegals? The only people this hurts are the ones breaking the law and the ones making money off of the people breaking the law. Go figure. I'd say we need more ordinances like this around the country.
Bttt!
"Wells Fargo should be more concerned about a potential RICO suit."
ROTFLOL!
"These banks knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to start accepting matriculas rather than an ID issued to legal residents. They are enablers of criminals."
Pure greed!!!!
