Someone said the USGS does not monitor activity under 4.0 unless in the US.

USGS saying none in the peninsula, per FNC...

I think it is important to recognize that NO SEISMIC activity is reported. If this was a nuclear device -- it was very small, if it happened at all. Not sure what to make of this -- the only confirming source is NK itself. I suspect that this is bluster...

Let me be the first:

Bush's fault.

No laughing matter. CNN just reported such nonsense!

Bush called North Korea an Axis of Evil and therefore caused THIS!!!

James Rosen is NOW pointing out the Clinton deal and how North Korea cheated and so one on one talks don't work, we've been down that road!

OK...Fox gets a point from me, after a week of abysmal Foley coverage.

FNC said that there is NO sign of anything on seismic test...yet; no radiation, no nothing.

But, it's still early....

If you'd bother to read a variety of posts, you'd note that the USGS doesn't bother to note quakes under magnitude 4 outside of the US...ever.

If the magnitude of the test was indeed 3.5 it was a pretty small nuke, under 5 kilotons.

I've noticed that people have a weird concept of the power of nukes vs. quakes - even fairly routine quakes are more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, and fairly common magnitude 6-7 quakes are several megatons of energy.

I think you need to look at the link posted in 112. Practically every station around the world is reporting an event at the same time.

jeez louise....Janice on Fox just said that the US meteorological center has reported NO seismic activity in the last 48 hours... WHY would ABC news report the 3.4 on the richter scale then??

Well the State Department can't confirm it, so it is obviously true.

Hello,

Drudge just said that as this test of a nuclear device was being done, he was talking about Foley's e-mails...and that it now seems silly...

Glad to be here, MOgirl

From Foxnews.com...

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test Monday, Yonhap news agency reported, citing government officials.

South Korean officials couldn't immediately confirm the report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has convened a meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported, and intelligence over the test has been exchanged between concerned countries.

• CountryWatch: North Korea

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The director of South Korea's monitoring center that is watching for a test with sound and seismic detectors declined to immediately comment on the reported test. The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it's not clear if a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.
