It is my guess that, if it is true that this was a hoax, Foley did not know it and responded with salacious e-mail. So he had to resign because of what he wrote, not what he received.

I have been suspicious on the IM's all along - too easy to fake. I think there is blackmail going on here for something worse than a 54 year old pervert flirting in e-mail. Maybe not, but it has the earmarkings...

Because he's a homo who has been trying to seduce these college kids for as long as he has been in a position of authority. He probably can't even remember all the inappropriate things he's done much less the criminal ones. It's just my speculation though.
And it should be remembered that these "kids" aren't exactly innocent. They are like the ones that used to go to Hollywood years ago to try to screw their way into the movies. They all have dreams of political careers.

honestly, this 'news' smells. anyone who read those messages would have a hard time finding them to have been a 'prank' even if from an admittedly (now) gay man.
People who think this affair helps the republicans in any way, or who believe this 'news' like gospel, are missing a big point - no one is going to find the IM's a favorable item for republicans, and the Freeh 'investigation' will drag out beyond the election.
As you note, he resigned IMMEDIATELY, meaning there is surely a heck of a lot of fire somewhere for this much smoke.
