It has been explained that the IM's of a sexual nature where sent after the boy was 18. There is nothing unseemly or illegal about a Congressman, even if gay, contacting a minor who was employed with him and inquiring about his welfare, etc.
Few folks listen to retractions.

This story was broken on one small site, quickly migrated here where it has been analyzed and pondered overnight. Next the story will be on the large blogs and probably on Rush today. At some point the MSM will finally pick it up. Patience.
That's why it's a stretch -- a serious stretch, IMO -- to believe that Foley was able to IM this young man 10 years ago. Not only that, but he (Foley) was able to -- somehow -- get his IM number. I will grant that it's possible -- probable? -- that the gay community adopted IM sooner than the rest of us did.
As a computer professional and geek I can tell you that 1999 - 2000 are the years that IM really caught on. AOL's proprietary IM protocol wasn't very popular, and the introduction (November 1996) of a free IM client by Mirabilis (ICQ) put AOL on its heels; which is why AOL bought Mirabilis in 1998 for nearly 300 million dollars. It took AOL another 2 years to integrate ICQ with their IM (AIM).
If Foley's homosexuality was such an "open secret" (btw that term seems meaningless), why wasn't he seriously challenged by another Republican years ago?
I believe the second quote was from yesterday morning. What you are seeing is the difference in "recollection" before and after a forced resignation which the resignee has publicly blamed on Hastert.

The GOP leadership didn't know anything about Foley's explicit IMs. Without any proof, they could not do anything about suspicions.
Let's review a little about what we now know.
First, everyone involved in this "outing" are gay, including the Republican staffers and the young man.
The young man knew Foley was gay when he took the job.
The young man was himself, openly gay when he took the job and already frequenting the gay scene.(from another Page in the same class)
The young man bills himself as a political operative and has been caught acting as a mole at a Republican fund raiser.
The kid descibes himself as the most insensative (sic)(the kid can't spell and has poor grammar)guy that you will ever meet.
The kid bragged at his fraternity about having the copies of the IMS. He thought he was very clever, not victimized at all.
The rabid gay activist flew the kid out to get a look at the evidence and talk to him, sometime before he put the plan in place (last spring?)
The young man has hired or someone else has hired a big time DEMOCRAT defense lawyer. (chances are this kid was an affirmative action student and hire and does not have the money to pay for this kind of lawyer).
The kid dropped out of school and is working in OK for the Istook campaign, where he was caught working as mole for Istook in the primary. The kid's model must be Chris Lehane.
One word....NAMBLA....North American Man BOY Love Association!! They want the Age of consent LOWERED and the Dems ACLU, anti-Christians Love Us, is helping them get it lowered!!

I think Foley should ask Janet Reno to defend him, since she made statements supporting lowering the age of consent.
