Report: Oil discovered in Dead Sea area
Jerusalem Post ^ | Oct. 4, 2006 | JPost.com staff

Oil has been discovered in the Dead Sea area, Dr. Eli Tenenbaum, an official from Genco, the national company responsible for drilling in the region, reported on Wednesday. Tenenbaum stated that the amount of oil could reach commercial levels.

"We noticed that the pressure in the area was very high and when we opened the tap, oil started flowing freely for several minutes," Tenenbaum told Channel 10.

Tenenbaum said that the workers washed their hands with the "black gold" when they made the discovery. "We hope it was the first of many [such discoveries]," he added excitedly.

Not far from the drilling site, the crew spotted an oil reserve that Tenenbaum described as "very attractive," which they believed contained between four and six million barrels, worth an estimated 300 million dollars.

The operation began 10 years ago but was put on hold since it was not deemed economically viable. However, due to the recent soaring oil prices the discovery of new oil sources became necessary.

Genco was drilling at a depth of 2000 meters.

Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer said it was "just the beginning" and that is was vital to find out whether the oil field was commercially viable or not.

"It is an encouraging sign," he said. "We are checking the entire area and we are opening the whole region for drilling. We will give our full support to any company that wants to try."

It wouldn't be just ironic, it might even be prophetic...giving the world a greater reason for fighting over Israel!

Maybe you're thinking of Steve Spillman (author of "Breaking the Treasure Code" which is a fascinating read). You can find a little info on it here:

Zion's well is a much more viable location than Zenco's. Their well will spud in April and is being drilled just east of Ceasaria. You can check out the geology on their website. The dead sea well is the third well drilled in that area and I doubt very much that it will be commercial. The oil is extremely heavy--in fact where they drilled was the first known commercial use of oil in the world, as they used it for grease as early as the Canaanite period. However, people have been intrigued by the Dead Sea because there are many salt domes that are imaged on seismic. However, the timing of the structures was wrong for meaningful accumulations.

Deuteronomy 33:24 And of Asher he said:

“Asher is most blessed of sons;
Let him be favored by his brothers,
And let him dip his foot in oil.

I saw Zion Oil's public offering on 9/26 and wondered if it was a scam. I hadn't followed this before. Hey, if the world is going to end, at least I'd like to make a buck or two off the deal. :-)

As if Jordan wouldn't go to war with them over control of the source.

Probably would accuse them of slant drilling.

A four to six million barrel find is nice. Of course it would take years to produce that much.

Putting it into some perspective, though, the Saudis are pumping 12 million barrels every day.

I think Israel will have a big find at some point, at least big in relation to their size.

Anything to help wean them off Muslim oil, every drop, is good.
(the same could be said for us)

I get wood just thinking of Islamic oil not being needed by
the civilized world. What a happy thought it is.

Cool!

Well, not really - the Dead Sea is "rather" hot and dry, but at least these Israeli oil wells will start off closer to the oil-bearing rock than anywhere else on earth........

Not bad. And, even if the discovery is under the "'wrong" side of the river, with a little effort, they can twist-drill a little bit east and get it anyway. 8<)
