Karzai Says bin Laden Not in Afghanistan

President Hamid Karzai has insisted that Osama bin Laden is not in his country, in the latest installment in a row with the leader of Pakistan who says the Al-Qaeda chief is in Afghanistan.

Other militant leaders including Islamist warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar were also not in the country, Karzai told reporters in a briefing about his visit to the United States that was overshadowed by the spat.

'I can assure you they are not in Afghanistan,' Karzai said yesterday after being asked for his reaction to comments by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf who said Thursday that bin Laden is here.

"KGB Letter Outlines Sen. Kennedy's Overtures to Soviets, Prof Says"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In his book, Kengor focuses on a KGB letter written at the height of the Cold War that shows that Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) offered to assist Soviet leaders in formulating a public relations strategy to counter President Reagan's foreign policy and to complicate his re-election efforts.

The letter, dated May 14, 1983, was sent from the head of the KGB to Yuri Andropov, who was then General Secretary of the Soviet Union's Communist Party.

In his letter, KGB head Viktor Chebrikov offered Andropov his interpretation of Kennedy's offer. Former U.S. Sen. John Tunney (D-Calif.) had traveled to Moscow on behalf of Kennedy to seek out a partnership with Andropov and other Soviet officials, Kengor claims in his book.

At one point after President Reagan left office, Tunney acknowledged that he had played the role of intermediary, not only for Kennedy but for other U.S. senators, Kengor said. Moreover, Tunney told the London Times that he had made 15 separate trips to Moscow.

"There's a lot more to be found here," Kengor told Cybercast News Service. "This was a shocking revelation."

It is not evident with whom Tunney actually met in Moscow. But the letter does say that Sen. Kennedy directed Tunney to reach out to "confidential contacts" so Andropov could be alerted to the senator's proposals."

Muslims Attack Christians in Henno, Ethiopia

WASHINGTON, DC (ANS) -- The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC), has just been informed that on July 20, 7 Muslim leaders (clerics) brutally attacked 50 or more Christians in Henno, Ethiopia.

In a news release, ICC says, “This latest attack is just one example of the increasing violence against Christians in Ethiopia. In fact, Islamic leaders are urging Muslims in the area to kill full-time Christian evangelists. The situation has reached such intensity that Christian leaders are in fear and moving in pairs to ward off attacks. Local Muslim authorities failed to take action against the Muslim attackers.”
Henno is located in the district of Kokosa of the Oromia region, 404 kilometers South of Addis Ababa.

The release goes on to say, “In 2005, two prominent Muslims in Henno converted to Christianity: ‘H,’ a well known Muslim leader, and ‘M,’ the son of a well-respected Muslim tribal leader. The two conversions angered Muslim leaders in the surrounding region. On July 20, 2006, ‘M’ hosted a worship service for the other Christians in Henno and invited a choir from the Sidama region.

“The worship service gained the attention of the whole village, including Muslim leaders who responded violently by instigating a riot, using gangs in the area. The gangs were carrying local weapons such as knives, stones, and metal rods.

“The Muslim leaders demanded the expulsion of the choir from the area. The new believer and former Muslim leader, ‘H,’ refused to stop the service despite their pressure. Consequently, the crowd began to beat ‘H’ and other Christians in the house with their weapons.”

According to ICC, “H” was beaten badly, receiving five deep wounds to his head. Because he was beaten with an iron rod, he was also missing teeth. He suffered deep lacerations to his legs, where several ligaments protruded from the skin. “H’s” daughter-in-law was pregnant at the time but lost her baby because she was also severely beaten.

In total, twelve people were seriously injured; five others were found to have lacerations on their body and received medical treatment in Shashamene Kuyera Hospital. “H” also received care and has recovered from the attack.

The release went on to say that the Christians reported the riot to the district government administrative office, which took no legal action. Instead, the officers warned Christians not to worship in a region that is predominately Muslim. It is important to note that all officers who heard the case were in fact Muslim. The case was then taken to a higher police authority. The police responded by arresting 26 gang members. However, they were released quickly because tribal elders appealed to the government.

An Encouraging Note

In the following weeks, many Muslims denounced the actions taken against the Christians. To express their disgust, Muslims refused to go to Mosques. In fact, forty-seven key leaders became Christians and renounced Islam stating, ‘If Islam means killing innocent brothers and sisters – we do not want to follow it!’

The ICC release concluded by saying, “Please pray for the Christians in Henno, Ethiopia who are in need of your support in the midst of persecution from Muslim leaders who want to annihilate them. ICC encourages all concerned parties to contact the Ethiopian embassy in the United States, to respectfully express concern that the freedom of Christians in Ethiopia is not being sufficiently protected.”

"Acid attack man sentenced to jail"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A man who threw acid in the faces of two police officers has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Amir Abdul-Latif, 21, sprayed sulphuric acid on the officers as they tried to arrest him outside Earlsfield station, in south London, for breaching bail.

The Kingston Crown Court convicted Abdul-Latif on two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He had pleaded guilty to the charges. Both officers have returned to work, but are yet to resume full duties."

Feds Charge Wis. Man in Stadium Threat

Federal authorities Friday charged a Wisconsin man in a hoax threat that warned seven football stadiums across the nation would be targeted by terrorists with radiological "dirty bombs" this weekend. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark did not immediately identify the man but said in a news release announcing the charge that he would be in court in Milwaukee later Friday.

One of the stadiums allegedly targeted was Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

The FBI determined the threats were a hoax on Thursday.

A joint statement from the FBI and Homeland Security Department said fans "should be reassured of their security as they continue to attend sporting events this weekend."

An FBI official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is still under investigation, told The Associated Press that the Milwaukee man acknowledged posting the phony stadium threat as part of a "writing duel" with a man from the Brownsville, Texas, area to see who could post the scariest threat.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEWARK, N.J. -- A Wisconsin grocery store clerk surrendered Friday on charges in an Internet hoax threatening a "dirty bomb" plot against U.S. football stadiums and told prosecutors he had posted the same message about 40 times over the past few weeks, federal authorities said.
Jake J. Brahm, of Wauwatosa, Wis., surrendered to the U.S. Marshal's Service on Friday morning and was scheduled to appear in court in Milwaukee later in the day.

He was charged in a sealed criminal complaint filed Thursday in Newark, U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said. One of the seven stadiums allegedly targeted was Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Christie said Brahm admitted that between September and Wednesday he had posted the same threat about 40 times on various Web sites.

"These types of hoaxes scare innocent people, cost business resources and waste valuable homeland security resources. We cannot tolerate this Internet version of yelling fire in a crowded theater in the post-9/11 era," Christie said.

Brahm was first taken into custody by police in Wauwatosa on Wednesday based on information authorities received that he was the source of the Internet threat, federal authorities said.

FBI agents interviewed him that night, and the FBI said Thursday it had determined the threat was a hoax.

A joint statement from the FBI and Homeland Security Department said fans "should be reassured of their security as they continue to attend sporting events this weekend."

Brahm worked as a grocery clerk at Outpost Natural Foods, a co-op near his house, said Jeremy Layman, assistant store manager. He said Brahm made his shifts on time and was not a concern.

Erik Vasys, spokesman with the FBI in San Antonio, said there would be no charges against the Texas man.

"I was advised he interacted with this gentleman in Milwaukee, just downloaded some things, but he was not part of the hoax writing," Vasys said."
