Secondhand Lions is an all time classic that should be a staple in everyone's movie collection IMHO! Wonderful pick!

I'll recommend two that I have seen this year, one in the theater and it's now on DVD, and one rare one that is also on DVD.
1. United 93, directed by Paul Greenglass. I thought the depiction of chaos in a military command post in a time of combat was particularly apt (and later discovered that most of the people in that scene are real airmen and -women who were on duty that day, not actors). Likewise, several of the key "Actors" in FAA positions are real controllers (I recognized one voice from Boston Center). Which brings me to the only error I noticed -- it places Boston (enroute air traffic control) Center in Boston (it's in NH).
2. Saints and Soldiers, made a couple of years ago by a couple young Mormon filmmakers. Don't get your hackles up over the Mormon thing (I'm not LSD, I mean LDS, either) -- it's an excellent war movie that punches far, far above its budget weight. By using volunteer reenactors they were able to make a movie that's a spectacle reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan for what Steve Spielberg probably pays his staff astrologer.
3. I said two, but thought I'd mention a DVD reissue that I've been missing, that just came out. Grand Prix, from 1966, with James Garner, Yves Montand, Eva Marie Saint, and a bunch of fantastic character actors (Toshiro Mifune as a Japanese industrialist) and even one scene with the GP drivers of the year, including many who are not with us like Bruce McLaren (testing crash) and Graham Hill (plane crash).
I also thought Oliver Stone's movie was good -- World Trade Center. Mickey Kaus had a good review very recently that disagreed.

Incredible acting, Shirley MacLaine, Cameron Diaz, and Toni Colette are fabulous - especially Colette, she is wonderful. It was funny, smart, and heartwarming. If you are a woman with a sister, go rent it NOW.

My daughter is 9. Excellent talented student. Last night, spent about 2 hours on HW. Too much. It's just over the top for a 9 year old. Homework is fine. Too much, I find it to be a negative thing for such a positive student.
Sounds great but I don't think I could get away with it.

My daughter gave us "Saints & Soldiers" for Christmas last year. A great choice to pick.

The FUNNIEST movie I've seen this year didn't come out this year--I saw it on DVD. It was "Undercover Brother." Even my wife laughed like crazy, and she's really hard to please!
I can go on and on, but don't want to bore all of you even more.

Not ALL of it is bad. But given what comes out...I certainly understand why some people feel that way.
See....that's just what I mean. The kids are in sshool for 7+ hours a day then they are expected to do 2 hours of homework after? That's just plain wrong.
I once asked a teacher if you are sending home so much work home what in the world are you doing in class!
Children have other lessons they need to learn at home. Chores....socializing with the family unit & for heavens sakes some FREE TIME!
