If they know where you're coming from, you might be getting a 'sanitized' version of their true views. I've worked with several lefties who put on a good front when they knew I was around.

Don't make the mistake that leftist == anti-military. I know some military and ex military, who other than on military matters are pretty far left themselves. They "grow up" in an essentially socialist culture, where almost everything, food, clothing, medical care, is provided by Uncle Sugar. Not as true as it was 20 or 30 years ago of course, and even when Uncle provides it's often through third parties or a cash "in lieu of" whatever, making it more like the civilian world of employer paid health insurance and a rather strangely calculated salary.
