B2 Bomber seen over Staten Island, NY

Posted on 09/16/2006 6:09:08 PM PDT by fightnight

Saw a B2 Spirit while visiting Staten Island today.. It was a beautiful sight to see. Very quiet -- you wouldn't know it was over you until it was too late..

I've been waiting to see one for quite a while, and finally got a chance to. My son pointed out a plane to me, and I looked up expecting to see a passenger jet but instead saw the B2... :-)

It was actually a blue tortilla chip. The local Boy Scouts were having a tortilla chip toss on SI today.

I've made a similar mistake before.

I saw it do a fly over of the 2000 Rose Bowl. Very cool!

We had one do a flyover at the Patriots game last Sunday. Absolutely the coolest thing ever. You're right, it's totally silent until it goes by. And then WHOOOOOOSH.

It was in the cloud layer at about 2:00pm EST. Whatever that was, was the altitude it was at..

I haven't seen a B2 yet, but I've seen the Blue Angels twice.

Made me damn proud to be an American!!

That was a nazi plane? Didn't we have the 'flying wing', before them?

I was watching a documentary about Nazi plane prototypes and it looked a lot like the bomber. They later talked about how Northrop Grumman guys went and retrieved it from a museum in the US. It was pretty fascinating. You probably know better than me about the 'flying wing' but when I saw this Nazi plane I immediately thought of the planes we have today. It's pretty fascinating although petronski knows better than me what inroads the Nazis had into US aerospace tech.

I'd be willing to bet that it's the same aircraft that I saw over the Connecticut shoreline this afternoon - might have been a bit after 12 noon or perhaps closer to 1 PM - I was driving South on Connecticut Rt. 7 (the Super-Seven highway South of the Merritt Parkway), approaching the junction with I-95, and saw it directly ahead of me, relatively low altitude, probably right over Long Island Sound. I'm reasonably certain that its altitude was below 5000 feet. Initially saw it banking steeply so that the shape of the wings was distinctly visible, then it leveled out and flew roughly Southwest, and the view from the side is also quite distinctive... Don't see that around here every day - wonder whether there may have been an air show somewhere...

Yea sure. Just like they did........wait, how long has it been since the Jets beat the Patriots? Hmmm. Oh four years ago. 2002. Then, of course once in 2001. The Mo Lewis game which started it all. Ahhh memories.

The B2 "Stealth" Bomber is an incredible sight! My son attends college near their home base, and he is so accustomed to seeing them fly over/by that his reaction now is "Ho-Hum......" And you are correct: they are so quiet that you don't realize they're coming until they are overhead or past. Really cool!

Spooky, isn't it? We've been blessed with several close-up views at local airshows (Barksdale AFB, LA) and a side trip around KC once, to Whiteman AFB, MO.
So happy for you, that you had the opportunity to see it. It does make one's heart swell with patriotic pride, and make one thankful that it is on our side. In my experience.
