Witnesses: Gunfire, explosions near U.S. embassy in Damascus
By Haaretz Service and news agencies
Syrian security forces surrounded the U.S. embassy in Damascus early on Tuesday and sealed off the area, witnesses said, adding that heavy gunfire and explosions had been heard in the area.
"It appears that the embassy is coming under attack," one resident in the area told Reuters.
There was no independent confirmation of the initial reports.
Oh man stop it! I can't take this kind of laughter this early in the morning!
No reports or speculation that Hezz is involved in this.
Not necessary, I think.
For starters, I think we'll want our embassy building back. There will be a post-mullah Iran, and if the students in Iran manage to toss them out, we'll need an embassy as a base. We might want to think about changing the locks, though... (/clancy)
As for the Pueblo - that's what we have SEALs for. And large underwater demolition charges (since there's no chance in hell we could sail her out of the harbor).
Interesting observation.
I have no idea what you're disagreeing about.
Reportedly, one Syrian officer was killed.
Please provide a source and working link for this.
Thanks.
Incorrect. We still have an operating embassy in Damascus headed by a Charge'. We pulled our ambassador as a protest. US Embassy Damascus--key officers
3 attackers killed by Syrian security forces .. 4th wounded.
Pulled up in car, shouting religious slogans, perhaps car bomb, gunfight ensues with Syrian sec. guards guarding the compound. Possibly a Syrian sec. guard killed.
Tunnels are a problem in the ME, kind of like the drug tunnels at our borders.
That's a lot of Americans.
Can't say I'm surprised . Syria has been lurking in the shadows of the WOT for a long time.
It was eerily like the transitions in the old USSR. They always played a game of hide the body until the next guy is firmly in place.
they understand money and power, rather than ideology.
Sure, but playing the ideolgy pays off better than just about anything. The downside is all of the other guys who wanna bump you off to take your place.
Let me guess, "long live the amish" ?
Let me guess... they weren't shouting "Peace be with you."
Al Jazeera is saying four attackers killed.
In twelve hours we'll find out that this was completely out of character for the perpetrators, they always paid their rent on time, and were depressed due to failing grades.
gmta
There are more than that including families. The list contains only key officers.

"'Attack' on US embassy in Syria"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In April 2004, four people were killed in a clash between Syrian police and a team of suspected bombers in the diplomatic quarter of Damascus.
The authorities accused Islamic militants of trying to blow up an explosives-laden car near the Canadian embassy."
LOL -- I see that!
