Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.
Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.
She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."
"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.
Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.
"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.
"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.
DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.
Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.
"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.
Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.
Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.
DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.
Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.
Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.
Funny, you weren't saying that the other day.
"I am asking you. Why are you invading our thread? Is it to disrupt? Is it to hijack and get this moved to the Smokey Backroom like the last one from whence you came?
I have no gripes at what you post elsewhere, even at other Terri threads, but to invade this one, you are declaring a jihad and in doing so are revealing your essence.
"
You reveal yourself nicely.
I know what you mean. It was just constructive criticism on a certain point that I made. I don't think it was pulled.
Oh dear. I try to be modest. What was I revealing?
"Live are being saved, in honor of Terri Schindler Schiavo."
That's the best thing we can do, and what Terri would have wanted.
I usually do not have much to say one way or another and even don't quite believe your tagline, but you are here not really aware of what we do here and you are associating with those who have a real axe to grind with people who defend the innocent from euthanasia.
And you are civil and decent, I do agree, but you are missing the point of our threads. If you had followed, each month we take a theme, this case, of one poor Haliegh Poutre who was nearly killed as was Terri.
You got lumped in to the general description because of your association with the others who behave as trolls past have behaved and who use the same arguments. Should you abhor such a label, consider your company.
Your dripping sarcasm, to start with.
This is a questioning of who has the power to have a post pulled...certain allegations were made that some posters have the ability to have certain posts and certain threads pulled...many of us were merely questioning this, and whether that questioning occurs on this thread or any other thread, is of no consequence....its a matter of what is and what is not procedure on FR...
This is no Jihad, as you have put it...quite the buzzword, but it wont work...when false allegations are made, on whatever thread, any and all posters have the right to question the allegation...
Are you claiming that on this particular thread, only certain posters are allowed to voice their opinion?...I dont see disruption, what I see is people wanting facts about who does and who does not have the abiltiy and authority to have a post pulled...why does that have you so upset?...get a clear clarification can do no one any harm, and it can do us all a lot of good...why is that bad?
Not that facts matter to people like you, but what I typed was "It looks like the mods took care of a little problem. LOL"
Declaring jihad? Geez - get a grip. The hysteria level just went skyhigh.
This was in a real newspaper, so I don't have a link, "Our Sunday Visitor," the April 10, 2005 edition, & the author is Lori Hadacek Chaplin.
It was suggested to a doctor that they pull the plug of a little baby's ventilator, because he had flat brain waves. The doctor did not, and little Joseph not only lived, but went on to receive straight A's in school, run track and play baseball.
STRAIGHT A's. Now can you imagine how smart he would have been if he HAD brain waves when he was an infant? :)
The doctor, Dr. Byrne, is now a clinical professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Ohio and HAS BEEN A PERSISTENT VOICE against using brain-wave criteria for DETERMINING DEATH.
So we better think twice when allowing the doctors to give your loved ones' organs, because they are declared "brain dead."
Did you know that organs are more valuable when the patient is alive, but declared "brain dead?"
Hey, I am exercising restraint, due to my recent vow to be kinder and gentler. However, after the ridiculous way I've been treated here for simply daring to disagree, I think a bit of sarcasm is to be expected!
I actually would have been gone pages ago except for the way some posters here tend to go off the rail. To continue the metaphor, it's like watching a train wreck. . . It's hard to look away!
Yes - he replied that indeed the mod did take care of a little problem upthread. Why the mods pulled two innocuous posts is a mystery; feel free to ask them.
I myself was going to say that using the term, 'Jihad' was a classic case of the 'drama queen', but thought better of it, instead using the term 'buzzword'...however, upon more careful thought, I do think that 'drama queen' is appropriate in this case...
Probably the most innocuous post on this entire thread was mine which said "The mods took care of a little problem I see. Good. LOL"
Now, why they pulled it is a mystery which they can feel free to answer if they'd like. But I'm sure there's a certain contingent that would much prefer the "conspiracy".
drama queen works perfectly....
I was attempting to end a flamewar, a total waste of time on my part. I'm restoring all the pulled comments. Have at it.
