Tropical Storm Ernesto leaves Florida and heads for the Carolinas
NWS/NHC ^ | 30 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/30/2006 6:30:12 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Ernesto is poised to emerge into Atlantic waters after feebly creeping along the Florida peninsula. Media pundits with tremulous cameras dotted Florida's extensive coastline for the past 24 hours, showing video of children playing in the sand, dark skies, and occasional rain.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from Sebastian Inlet Florida to Cape Lookout North Carolina, as Ernesto moves north at 15mph. The storm's intensity and forecast track has puzzled forecasters for several days.

N.C. Governor Mike Easley and S.C. Governor Mark Sanford activated the National Guard today in their respective states, as the forecast track indicated Ernesto may regain tropical storm force winds, and make landfall again along the Carolinas coastline.

Four more MPH and he will be a minimal hurricane per some weather dude on a local station here.

Also, the track is a little more north and east than what I have been hearing. It looked to me as if they are projecting a landfall more towards Myrtle Beach/NC border??

The same weather dude mentioned a pretty good threat of tornadoes in the Wilmington area which he said would be the N/NE part of the storm.

All I know is it's gonna rain!

BTW, New Hanover and Brunswick counties in NC have already started having tornado warnings.

What was the first?

I'll grant Easley in NC and Kaine here in VA one thing--they may be Rats, but they aren't stuck on stupid. In non-political affairs of state like this, they're both reasonably competent.

Ditto Doug Wilder here in Richmond. Like I said in another post a while back, Doug Wilder is a Rat to the core, and one of the most arrogant SOBs in Virginia politics, but he does know how to run a city, and he doesn't take a lot of crap off anybody from any side of the political spectrum. They've already got crews down in Shockoe Bottom to keep the storm drains clear and they've also set up distribution points for free sandbags and sand so business owners can protect their properties.

As much as I dislike the guy, I really believe that if Doug Wilder had been running New Orleans, a hell of a lot more people would've been evacuated before Katrina hit.

The centerline of the 1100 track made landfall directly on the NC/SC border. So North Myrtle, Atlantic Beach, and on up toward Wilmington would catch it the worst. But the cone covered a lot of ground still, from Georgetown all the way up toward Ocracoke.

One of the very few things I like about Easley is he is very proactive and public safety conscious when it comes to storms. In cases of inclement weather, he does the right thing.

Oh, I didn't say I don't agree with him. But I don't have to like him.

I still don't like him.........

(what was the first?)

Public opposition to Bell's proposed smoking ban in private businesses........his reason is that it's too much government intrusion.

I agree with you in regard to the nonpartisan handling of such issues....

As to the other thing Kaine did I agree with was come out publily opposing Bell's proposed smoking ban in private business (not everyone agrees with me on that issue, but it's one of my issues)

That's great picture, we will need a pictionary, not a dictionary!

Start here if you missed the eerie clam series.

I would not be surprised to see Tropical Storm Watches or Warnings (at a minimum, Gale Warnings) issued up to Delaware or New Jersey. Winds gusting up to 29 mph at Wildwood, NJ, in the last hour. Storm really getting its act together too.

Not much going on in Cumberland County, NC right now (just before 3:00PM).

It's been cloudy with light rain since just after sunrise. It's to stay that way until around 8:00ish when the Hurricane gets closer.
