Tropical Storm Ernesto leaves Florida and heads for the Carolinas
NWS/NHC ^ | 30 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/30/2006 6:30:12 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Ernesto is poised to emerge into Atlantic waters after feebly creeping along the Florida peninsula. Media pundits with tremulous cameras dotted Florida's extensive coastline for the past 24 hours, showing video of children playing in the sand, dark skies, and occasional rain.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from Sebastian Inlet Florida to Cape Lookout North Carolina, as Ernesto moves north at 15mph. The storm's intensity and forecast track has puzzled forecasters for several days.

N.C. Governor Mike Easley and S.C. Governor Mark Sanford activated the National Guard today in their respective states, as the forecast track indicated Ernesto may regain tropical storm force winds, and make landfall again along the Carolinas coastline.

No question the states north of Florida have a more difficult time with flooding during heavy rains. Around here, the water just runs back into either the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, a real Category 5 storm is about to take out Wake Island. (it's that black dot, second square down, second square right from the top left.) Current weather on the Island...43 knot winds with 55 knot gusts, the hurricane is still about 100 miles from the island.

Everyone on the island has been evacuated according to media reports. (They didn't use the Nagin plan..)

Or just flows into the eight million sinkholes it seems pop up in your state every year.

They did leave a school bus on the island in a show of solidarity with NOLA.

Wow, we had one heck of a lightning show this evening. So close, so constant. It got everyone's attention here in a big way.

Parts of NC today have had heavy rains (4"+ in some locations) so if we should get a lot of rain from the remnants of Ernesto it could cause some serious flooding problems. Ironically, many areas need the rain ... just not in such big amounts at once.

I just happened to click on The Weather Channel as I was going through channels and I stayed just long enough to hear the Anchor-ette say, "It turns out many Floridians over-estimated the danger of Tropical Storm Ernesto...."

I didn't stick around long enough to hear whether or not she apologized for contributing to the over-estimation.

My guess is she didn't.

Well, that should be more than enough to get your pre-paid FEMA Debit Card (don't evacuate without it).

Well, the driveway isn't even completely wet at this point, so I'm taking a wait and see attittude.

Look at it this way, with your weather, the Lower Ninth Ward would be underwater at this point.
