Possible plane crash in Lexington, KY. My brother works security for Lexington UK Hospital and was just called in. No news locally or on major news outlets yet. I didn't want to post anything for fear of being wrong, but he's still waiting for an official call while on stand-by.
Update from WTVQ 36 Lexington:
A plane has crashed near the Blue Grass Airport this morning. No word on details at this time. We are told it was a commercial aircraft. Versailles Road is blocked as emergency vehicles circle around the site. We have live coverage beginning at 7:20am. Stay with Action News 36 for more details.
Hot fire - not smoke inhalation.
That's as reported on this thread and on local news segments
Unfortunately my grandfather who worked at this airport for 10+ years passed away in 2002, so I cannot call and ask his opinion.
how is Delta stock doing?

Governor Fletcher on speakerphone now.
Its amazing all the time spent on engines and maintenence etc when it seems pretty clear what happened.
Boeing must be loving it.
Fox reporting that most deaths due to fire - one crew member survived - probably up front and away from the fuel.
Sole survivor is the flight's First Officer, pulled from the nose by rescuers at great personal risk from the fire.
Incredible.
Antoher thing - you would figure that the crew would be able to eyebqll the length of the runway from the gitgo.
I am not a pilot but there is a BIG difference in the lengths and they should have been able to see the ends of BOTH runways prior to takeoff.
I think there is something more to this.
Anybody have a link to the google map location of site or to the burned hanger?
Wow. I find it unthinkable that the aircrew and controller would both allow a CRJ2 to taxi to and depart runway 26 at KLEX. Shocking if true.
Just a figure of speech - but I can't imagine any of the marketing boys asking first thing "was it one of ours?"
I'll add that at the airport I'm a controller at, KTOL, Comair pilots flying these same CRJ2s are often skiddish about using our runway 16/34, which is 5599 feet long.
Blue Grass Airport
skiddish = skittish
You would think the FAA would insist of specific runway numbers that shouldn't sound similar.
Officer Jim Paulhinky is the surviving crew member that is being treated at UK Hospital.
826 runway was just mentioned on FOX - crash is atthe end of that one.
As someone who knows nothing about the aviatio industry I must say that I am not comforted to hear that commercial pilots are "skittish" about a particular runway. Why don't they extend the runway or something? Geez.
...You would think the FAA would insist of specific runway numbers that shouldn't sound similar...
Just so you know: the name "35" means that the runway is oriented at 350 degrees from magnetic north. That way, when a pilot is lined up with a runway, he can look at his compass or directional indicator to figure out which runway it is. Makes it a lot easier than trying to read the numbers on the runway, particularly in bad weather, to see which runway is which.
That's why changing the names of the runways is not likely to happen.
