Bags of water hung to keep flies awayORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Restaurant operators along the coasts of Florida are trying a new, yet simple, way to repel flies on dining patios -- hanging bags of water.
Scientists say the method has no real merit, but restaurateurs on the Florida Keys and as far away as Texas swear by it, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
"It seems to be working," said Jeannie Eckbloom, a longtime server at Gator's, on the Seminole-Volusia line. "It's even keeping the birds away."
Some scientists believe the way the light shines through the water disorients the flies, which is why they are repelled.
The idea reportedly started in North Carolina a couple of years ago, where the bags were marketed as "Fly Fright." The company that sold those bags now appears to be out of business, the newspaper said.

My husband likes to leave his Corona bottles outside. The central Texas flies seem to be more drawn to it than the dog food. Of course, one of the reasons we have so many damn flies is because of the dog. Fecal matter in the yard doesnât help the problem but the empty Corona bottle sure gives the flies a delicious place to hang out until they drop dead. Never tried the bag method but Iâm ready to try anything to keep the disease carrying pests away.

We’ve been doing this in North Georgia for a decade at least. Go to any biscuit drive thru, BBQ joint, etc and you’ll see bags of water.

I’ve seen this many times, but as a mosquito repellent as opposed to flies.

[Outlaw Billy Mays - or will someone please beat the crap out of him.]
Bumping this year-old thread to let you know that I've got the "Billy Mays Talking Alarmclock" in product development at this very moment.
With that irritating shriek of his, no one will ever hit the Snooze Button, knowing they'd have to hear it all over again...

Shell No-Pest Strips. Damn Sam!
I never thought I would be reminded of them at this stage of my life.
They went out before "JARTS" did if I recall.

Remember, this must be done in an extremely loud, almost screaming voice that causes your teeth to grind, or you lose the whole effect.

Have heard of it years ago and tried it without any noticeable difference.

It has an unfortunate side effect in that it also disorients blondes. Only if they are barflies...
