Buchanan-Matthews 2008? Chris Pleads With Pat to Take Back GOP From Neo-Cons

Don't laugh. If Lenora Fulani could flirt with Pat Buchanan in 2000, why not a Buchanan-Matthews ticket in 2008? After all, the pair share a powerful unifying distaste for neo-cons.

On this evening's Hardball, Matthews pleaded with Buchanan to take back the Republican party from neo-conservatives. Matthews:

"Pat, when are the traditional conservatives in this country who believe in less government, less role in the world, like yourself, though you might be more extreme than some, George Will, Bill Buckley, when are you guys going to retake your party from the neo-conservatives and stop these overseas campaigns?"

Buchanan: "I'll tell you, when you get a president of the United States who doesn't listen to them. And frankly you've got a president and a country that have been horribly burned by following this foolish ideology and I think in the future, Chris, quite frankly, it needn't to have happened - I think after Iraq you're not going to get a lot of adventures, although they are pushing for the Iranian thing as the last great cause."

Perhaps the two could convince Ralph Nader to accept an anticipatory appointment as Secretary of State, with Ned Lamont at Defense. Can you say 'unstoppable juggernaut'?

Call it what you want but truly don't you think that we may today be better if we listened to Pat? Answer to the kool-aid drinkers on this site - NO. Answer to the rest of the country - YES.

LOL. If that were true SURELY he would have won an election by now. right? RIGHT? LOL

You Buchananites are a funny bunch. Glad your boy is absolutely not enticed to hide his anti-semitism so now he'll never get ANYWHERE except with nuts in caves and kooks behind their keyboards.

Did you catch the Chrissy and Biden show in the half hour before Buchanan??

OMG...they were both just crying about how Bush is just itching to go to war with Iran...(then I turn to Fox, and Col. Cowan and Col. Hunt, are crying that Bush isn't taking out Iran)...and Chrissy throws out that Bush couldn't possibly go to war with someone else..

We have lost 3500 troops in Iraq!!! I am thinking no way is it 3500...Chris just lied mightily..and Biden just sat there and nodded his head.

CNN ran on their bottom of the page ticker this evening that there are 2615 troops that have died in Iraq...

Chrissy only inflated the number almost by 1000!!!

I am sorry...but I couldn't watch Pat and Chrissy...

Pat was on Hannity and Colmes for 30 minutes last night..and on Sean's radio show..and 2-3 others...I can't stand Pat Buchanan...

Translation:
Matthews pleaded with Buchanan to return the GOP to the parody the Dems could regularly portray as racist, bigoted, homophobic, intelectually vapid Bible thumpers.

Bingo.  Chris wants a GOP that he can kick around, ridicule, and call names.

Pat Buchanan is not even a Republican. He resigned from the party years ago.

Exactly. He divorced the GOP, and not the other way around.

I care what lots of people who aren't Republican think, but I don't care what Arlen Specter thinks.

People like Pat aren't going to be elected to office without some sort of help from the GOP. The GOP can do without people like Pat.

In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression,

The bill was extremely protectionist in the products it covered.

Didn't he take over the Reform Party??

Yes he did, and Perot disowned himself from the Reform Party.

Tell me what Pat Buchanan has going for him.

He's a pitiful, bitter loser.

We are talkng about a man who is not sure about fighting WWII.

I think Mr. Buchanan is completely wrong about the war against Muslim jihadists, but your characterization of his comments about WWII is also wrong. He had no doubts about the need to fight WWII after Pearl Harbor. His difference with many people about WWII was whether any purpose was served in Britain and France promising to defend Poland when neither country had the resources to do so. His point was that more of the Polish people might have survived if Poland had tried to negotiate an early surrender instead of trying to resist while believing that either Britain or France could give meaningful assistance.

I don't know whether that hopeless promise to defend Poland was a good idea, so I'm not necessarily supporting his position on that issue. Mr. Buchanan was right about the Kosovo War in 1999. The Albanians were and are closely associated with Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda and other Muslim jihadists have been our enemies for 30 years. We were foolish to become involved in that war and particularly to become involved on the side of the Muslim jihadists. I don't have a problem with projecting American power to help secure our country. I fully support President Bush's efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, but he and other "neo-cons" were wrong about Kosovo.

Bill

I saw that conversation with Pat and Chrissy. I couldn't believe when Chrissy asked Buchanan to take back the GOP from the Neo-Cons.

I agree with much of what has been posted thus far on this thread. Buchanan (Bay also) should NEVER be portrayed as a Republican or even Conservative spokesperson. Paleo Conservatism is a brand of Nativist, Isolationist Populism.

I have interviewed and spent time with Pat for many years. He has always treated me with respect and good humor. I am Jewish (Messianic) and have never felt any tensions. Those Jews who know him swear he's not an Anti semite. I am loathe to call people a bigot. But, if he's not an Anti Semite he certainly attracts them and certainly has a problem with Jews. The Father Coughlin upbringing. I defended Pat for years on this account. But, can't do that any longer.

Chris Mathews is also a frequent guest over the years. We are both originally from Philly and really enjoy his company. He is a Lib. But not a smarmy Lib. Chrissy loves to surround himself with Irish political junkies. I think that's part of their chemistry. But, that display this evening was disgusting.

Buchanan's new book is the kind of thing that drives me nuts about the guy. He is 100% on the mark on this account. Third World immigration is destroying Western Democracies. It's a real threat to our way of life. He's wrong about so much but on this issue he's spot on.

Buchanan is a complex guy. I think he sees Facism as less of a threat than Communism. He's always been pointing out the emphasis of the misdeeds of the Facists. That's part of his Jew problem. However, he takes all of this way too far and his hatred of Israel and its supporters makes it impossible to believe he's just another guy who is anti-Israel and not anti Jew. That's a very difficult position to take and he does it with such ferocity it's obvious he's got real problems with Jews. If Pat had his way millions of Jews would either be displaced or killed. That's what it amounts to.

BTW, I hate the term Neo-Con. Hate it with a passion. It is a Leftist used term designed to marginalize those who believe we are at war with Islamofacism and must respond robustly. In the hands of many, including Pat it's codeword for Joooos.

He divorced the GOP, not the other way around So while running for the GOP nomination, as a Republican, having William Safire, William Bennett, George Will and Michael Medved (among others I can remember) say that if he won the nomination, they would not support his candidacy, is the Republicans supporting Buchanan?

The problem is, he was one of those candidates that draws support from the grassroots at the time, and the kingmakers could not have him in the position to win. It was too important to have Bob(lets make a deal)Dole get the prize.

If Pat runs and he gets less than 1%, do they round that up or down?

That depends. In 2000 Pat got 0.4%. Some sources round it down to 0% others just show an asterisk. It is really unlikely Buchanan could get that many votes today.

Even with Pat Paulson dead, it is conceivable he could be beat Buchannan in 08. As would Mickey Mouse, and Elvis. Run Pat Run!!!

Aw, nothing to see here folks. Chrissy is just stroking Pat's ego, hoping that he'll run in '08. And the only reason he wants that is to split the Republican vote so that hitlery can be elected.....
