President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base
Catholic Pro-Life Leader states: President Bushs implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research funding bill
FRONT ROYAL, Va., Aug. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, issued the following response to President George W. Bushs statements today regarding his support for Andrew von Eschenbach and his recent decision to seek over-the-counter (OTC) status for the abortifacient drug Plan B. When asked by reporter Bill Sammon about the situation, Bush stated: I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision.
President Bushs implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does.
The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the presidents position falls far short of that mark.
I reiterate my call for President Bush to withdraw his nomination of Andrew von Eschenbach for FDA commissioner and I implore him to rethink his own reckless approach to the powerful abortion-causing Plan B drug regimen.
Q [by Washington Times reporter Bill Sammon]: Thank you very much. Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions. Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?
THE PRESIDENT: I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision.
E-mail or call the White House and tell them what you think about his statement earlier today.

Catholic and pro-life ping!
"implied support"
"Implied support" overrides express opposition?
Well, there goes ANY chance of his being re-elected!!!
Where did President Bush express opposition to Plan B being over-the-counter for women over the age 18?
It hurts Republicans who have similar positions to him.
Yeah, like Catholics have been really big Bush supporters anyway.
And your source for this complaint is......
If you bothered to read the article, you'd find this line by Fr. Euteneuer. The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the presidents position falls far short of that mark.
Missed that. Nuts.
You are so right about this. I'm surprised my Catholic Church didn't have a vote for Kerry sign on the altar. I hate when people get side tracked about issues like this anyway. It is all about who Bush appoints to the bench. They are the ones making decisions that effect our lives. Carter's appointment of that awful judge that couldn't even write a well written decision puts all our lives in danger. People who won't vote for a Republican because of this decision or sit out and not vote will pay the price when a Hillary appointment makes a outrageous court decision.
Actions speak louder than words. The author here is caring more about what the president does - or doesn't do - than what he says.
someone read the dixie chix ask for divorce from country fans article.

Plan B is an abortifacient in some cases and allowing it to be distributed by prescription is wrong.
This is the way politicians double talk.
Plan B is promoted as birth control and as one GOP politico who is now the county chairman here in York County, PA put it some years ago. "I'm against abortion but I'm for birth control."
Wrong move for President Bush. He said he supports the plan for women over 18 to be able to get it. Its a microabortion drug. Wrong move Bush, Period.
Bush has had a lot of other actions that were pro-life. For example, appointing Alito and Roberts, pushing for a partial birth abortion ban, blocking fetal stem cell research, etc.
Why do those actions not count?
My source? Right down the street from you in Sacramento, Dan.
Spot on!
