Resilient Red Sox just won't go away
MSNBC.com ^ | 8/17/06 | Ron Borges

It's now or never for the New York Yankees.

The Yankees open a five-game series at Fenway Park on Friday with their alter egos in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox. Just 1 1/2 games will separate the two teams when that series begins.

Since the All-Star break, the Sox have slipped considerably, going 16-17 with problems surfacing with their starting pitching, relief corps and hitting (with the exception of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez). The Yankees, meanwhile, seem to have righted themselves after a long year of struggles with injuries and under-producing pitchers such as Randy Johnson. New York has gone 20-12 since the break to move past Boston into first place, a five-game reversal in 31 games.

Yet even with the additions of Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle and the improved pitching of Johnson, the Yankees won't separate themselves from the Red Sox if they don't make a move during this series, because Boston may be the most resilient team in the American League, if not in all of baseball. ...

For all the Red Sox difficulties of late, especially with their pitching, they could be tied for the division lead by Saturday morning if everything goes right and if they continue to play at home the way they have thus far.

That would give the Red Sox the advantage in the series and for the rest of the season. They would have their top three pitchers — Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling and David Wells — going in the final three games against the Yankees, with a chance to turn the tables on them just when much of the world felt New York was ready to assert itself and pull away.

We've heard about Yankee's "insurmountable" leads before.

I didn't need to see that picture. I was there. If you look closely at the picture, you can see a 13 year-old boy curled up in the fetal position.

Three of the four games in this series will be nationally televised by ESPN this weekend. The only game that won’t be show is part of a double header.

Meanwhile, at a point well west of the center of the universe known as the east cost, the defending world champs and the hottest team in baseball since June 1st will lock horns with only two games separating them in the wild card race. These two teams are resigned to the wild card race only because another team in their division (that is completely ignored by the east coast types at ESPN) is the best team in baseball this year.

How many games of this series will the national audience of ESPN see? The same number as Cub world championships since 1908. You east coast Yankee/Sox types and your Bristol bobos can stuff it. Your rivalry is boring and your self importance is nauseating.

It's funny. I had lost all interest in baseball, but for some reason tuned into game 4 of that series in about the eighth inning. It was an interesting game, especially when what's-his-name was put in as a pinch-runner. I couldn't believe that a Red Sox player was actually a threat to steal. The cat and mouse game was great.

The next day, I told my Massachusetts co-workers that the Sox had a good chance to take the series, with Schilling and Martinez coming up in the rotation, and everyone laughed.

That would be an effective commercial.

Hey, don't worry about the 12-run whupping they got from Baltimore yesterday - the Yankees are a much better team than the Oriole's.
So don't fret Yankee fans, I doubt the Bosox will get much more than 12 runs a game......

Boston sucks and we are going to whip their ass PING!

Would that be with your purse or with A-Rod's?

They lost their two corner outfielders and until buying Abreu at WalMart, had to patch together a line up with the likes of Bubba Crosby. I don't say this as a yankee fan for if Saddam Hussein had a baseball team I'd root for them against the Yankees, but in the interests of accuracy.

Completely agree, and I'm a Sox season ticket holder. Given the Yankees' "depleted" roster this season, and the fact that GayRod sucks, the Sox should be 5 or 6 up on the Yanks right now, not 1.5 back. The TB/KC 1-5 road trip was an unmitigated disaster, and the 1-2 homestand v. Detroit didn't help things either.

Jason Johnson sucks, Lester is fresh out of diapers, Beckett is turning into Waybeckett, and Wells is a crapshoot. The only guy who's a guaranteed gamer is Schilling.

Check out GayRod picking up the hem of his skirt. Where's his blue lip gloss when he needs it?

A-Rod's, the reigning MVP.
Even with a sub-par season the Red Sux are still trailing.

Yeah but it apparently looked worse than it was. They expect him to be back in time for the playoffs.
