Looking for Map of Cell Phone Purchases
self | August 11, 2006 | madison10

Posted on 08/11/2006 3:01:13 PM PDT by madison10

Has any one made a map, or done any tracking, of cities/towns the cell phones are being purchased? or of where the suspects are being picked up?

Thanks.

Ohio charges dropped according to Detroit Free Press. Can't post it here though because of Copyright complaints. Just two young Arab boys trying to make some money is the gist. Yep, with 600 cell phones - sure.

Scratch that again-- not dropped (as the Detroit Free Press said) but possibly delayed until they get the case more airtight --

http://www.wtap.com/news/headlines/3566067.html
The Washington County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday afternoon it will not proceed with felony charges against two men arrested last week following the purchase of numerous disposable cell phones.

A preliminary hearing that had been set for Tuesday, August 15, will not take place.

The prosecutor's office says it will proceed, though, with the falsification charge as currently filed against Osama Abulhassan and Ali Houssaiky.

According to the prosecutor's office, The state is currently in possession of sufficient evidence in support of probable cause on the felony charges, however, more information is needed to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

The next step would be to take the matter directly to a grand jury. However, at this time, the state is not prepared to seek indictments because the matter is still under investigation in multiple state jurisdictions, including Michigan.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office continues to be in contact with federal and other state law enforcement authorities, and information is being shared in furtherance of this investigation.

A decision will be made later regarding whether to take this case to the Washington County Grand Jury.

The Washington County Prosecutor's Office and federal authorities say they do not believe that the defendants pose an imminent threat at this time.

For the very latest on this breaking story, be sure to watch WTAP News at Six and check back here for further updates.

Just a couple of yutes trying to earn extra college cash traveling from TX to AL to OH to MI. Driving. That's what they should do. Instead of attending class they should just drive, picking up some cell phones along the way. LOTS of cell phones. With no chargers.

You can add Marion, IN to your map. I saw a story on their newspaper's website about the Marietta, OH incident which mentioned that Marion has had four similar incidents this year at their Wal-Mart.

Here is the link. The Indiana info is mentioned in the first line, at the end of the article, and in the "At a Glance" box at the side:

"Suspicious Cell Phone Purchase Investigation"
Aug 14, 2006 10:55 PM
Mark Stine KOLD News 13 Reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""What we got was a 9-1-1 report of two middle eastern males in the Sam's Club on Stone South of River," Tucson Police Sergeant Mark Robinson explained.

The report was made because of suspicious activity.

"That bought a large quantity of disposable cell phones."

Tucson Police Sgt. Mark Robinson explains why buying these cell phones could be considered suspicious. "People involved in criminal activity use these types of phones because they're easy to smuggle and they're hard to track."

Last week, two men were arrested in Ohio with more than $10,000 in cash and a dozen cell phones.

According to a Detroit newspaper, police stopped their car after a store clerk reported the men had been acting suspiciously. They face felony terrorism charges.

Police arrested three men in Michigan this weekend after the men purchased 1,000 cell phones.

The FBI says it has no information linking the three men to terrorism."

Ever since 9/11, when I fly anywhere, I pack a couple of very thick ham sandwiches. Don't know if I could do that under the new rules.

I've updated my map at Frappr. When you click on each of the icons an information ballloon pops up with more details on each purchase. Some of the icons are so close together it's hard to separate them unless you zoom in.

Great job on that.....thank you.

I actually had to go to Walmart yesterday. I asked the guy at the cellphone counter if he had encountered any of these large purchases and he said no. He did look at me strangely though. :) I told him I am a citizen investigator. LOL

This is something all of us here at FR could do. Although at this point with all the publicity they may stop buying these in obviously large quantities. But, then again most of them are really stupid so anything is possible.

Note that these two guys came from Minneapolis. (Remember that one of the missing Egyptian students happened to end up in Minnesota).

If all of us were walking around armed, not only would terrorism cease to be a threat, but crime would go down as well. 9/11 wouldn't have happened if a passenger or flight attendant popped a cap on the hijackers. It might have caused a plane to go down, but they'd not have made it to the WTC.

But you're right...we lost that war a long time ago.
