Washington - US Muslim groups criticised US President George W Bush on Thursday for calling a foiled plot to blow up airplanes part of a "war with Islamic fascists," saying the term could inflame anti-Muslim tensions.
US officials have said the plot, thwarted by Britain, to blow up several aircraft over the Atlantic bore many of the hallmarks of al-Qaeda.
"We believe this is an ill-advised term and we believe that it is counterproductive to associate Islam or Muslims with fascism," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group.
Restraint
"We ought to take advantage of these incidents to make sure that we do not start a religious war against Islam and Muslims," he told a news conference in Washington.
"We urge him (Bush) and we urge other public officials to restrain themselves."
Awad said US officials should take the lead from their British counterparts who steered clear of using what he considered inflammatory terms when they announced the arrest of more than 20 suspects in the reported plot.
Hours after the news broke, Bush said it was "a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation."
'Islamo-fascism'
Bush and other administration officials have used variations of the term "Islamo-fascism" on several occasions in the past to describe militant groups including al-Qaeda, its allies in Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Homeland security secretary Michael Chertoff told MSNBC television the phrase reflected what he called Osama bin Laden's own vision of leading a totalitarian empire under the guise of religion.
"It might may not be classic fascism as you had with Mussolini or Hitler. But it is a totalitarian, intolerant imperialism that has a vision that is totally at odds with Western society and our rules of law," Chertoff said.

Since when is this news? Muslims go around in a perpetual state of rage. They must have a very high ability to sustain this level of anger because most normal people would have already dropped dead from strokes and heart attacks.
If there is ever a story that says, "Muslims are happy," "satisfied," "serene," "content," "grateful," "funny," "loving," "gentle," "compassionate," "kind," then THAT should be in BREAKING NEWS.

Anger creates tension. Normal people, as you said, release this energy is sex, sports, rock 'n' roll. Moslems release their built-up anger in mass murder.
Now this plot, just like 9/11, required a great deal of planning, intelligence, creativity, dedication, talent, and teamwork. Normal people with all these talents put them to use putting a man on the moon, building a space shuttle, performing brain surgery, finding a cure for cancer, inventing the personal computer, composing symphonies and works of art.
Look at what the Germans and Japanese accomplished once they were convinced to abandon their warlike ways and apply their talents to creative and productive goals.

To all Muslims everywhere:
If Islam is truly a 'religion of peace', then it is your responsibility to:
- Denounce all terrorists within your religion
- Ostracize and exile them from your communities
- Forbid them access to your Mosques
- Shun them and their families
- Deny them financial resources
- Alert the proper authorities of their presence and plans
- Remove from power and position those clerics an Mullahs that instigate, approve of, and inspire terrorism and martyrdom
- Renounce Sharia law and demand the end of barbaric practices
- Prevent the indoctrination of your children to martyrdom and hatred
- Respect life and individual freedom
- Reform Islam and the Koran to remove barbaric practices and ideas
Until this is done, all Muslims will be suspect and Islam will be an unacceptable barbaric cult, soon to be recognized as such and rejected by the rest of the world.
It's long past time to charge these apologists with sedition and thow their a$$es in jail.

It is way past time we here in America call the enemy what they are....Islamic Terrorists Muslims!! ISLAMIC TERRORISTS MUSLIMS!! You haven't read this in the MSM, you don't hear it on TV and noone is calling the enemy what they are. Isn't it strange that ALL the attacks on countries around the world are done by MUSLIMS?? The Russian attrosity in Breslin was one of the most horrific events that ever happened. These victoms were mostly children. What will it take to name the enemy and identify him for what he is?? An American school?? What happened yesterday was a wake up call...thank God it was caught in time and foiled.
