I'll keep that in mind.

I'll be coming home from an assignment in Germany next summer and have been toying with coming back into the US through New York.

Let me know if you need suggestions regarding hotels etc.

Now, here's a song about Queens by Paul Simon, proud graduate of Forest Hills High School and Queens College:

The mama pajama rolled out of bed, and she ran to the police station
When the papa found out, he began to shout, and he started the investigation
It's against the law, it was against the law
What the mama saw, it was against the law.
The mama looked down and spit on the ground ev'ry time my name gets mentioned
The papa say "Oy, if I get that boy
I'm gonna stick him in the house of detention."
I'm on my way, I don't know where I'm goin',
I'm on my way, I'm takin' my time, but I don't know where.

Goodbye to Rosie, the Queen of Corona
See you, me and Julio down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio down by the schoolyard

In a couple of days they come and take me away
But the press let the story leak
And when the radical priest come to get me released
We's all on the cover of Newsweek
Well, I'm on my way, I don't know where I'm goin'
I'm on my way, I'm takin' my time, but I don't know where

Goodbye to Rosie, the Queen of Corona
See you, me and Julio down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio down by the schoolyard

If, GC, you do route through NYC let me know. I have a standing offer to Freepers who visit to provide an off-the-tourist-map walking tour of Manhattan from South Ferry up, including Ground Zero...and the location of Prohibition Era Speaks.

About Queens, its strength and its main attraction is its people. Nowhere else in the country is the combination of multi-generation America (some of it in million dollar neighborhoods) and first generation - on their way up fast - displayed side-by-side in such numbers. In many ways the demographic of Queens is an intensified first look at what the rest of the country will look like a generation or two from now.

.....The celebration for Sept. 10 is chilling.......

I'll say!

Either its an utterly stupid mistake on someones part to schedule something like this the day before the anniversary of you-know-what or its a deliberate in-yo-face move.

I tend towards the latter of the two possiblities.

Chumley's - that's the one on all the maps. Did you know that Pete's Tavern ran a back room speak that was entered through the refrigerated room of the flower shop next door? That's where my Grandfather celebrated things.

I agree.

I wonder where this group is in proximity to the Islamic Thinkers Group in Jackson Heights.
