A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.
Shoot........I was just getting ready to lie down!
And at that cost, most commercial air carriers would be out of business.
'Bout time!
"The *CHILDISH* thing is to not profile.
Can you not imagine a caucasian muslim radical? Your profiling is useless against a blond muslim with a suntan."
So, you're saying because such a thing is possible that everyone should just throw their hands up and not scrutinize the statistically most likely group?
Prayers for you all.
YES! ALL 20 of the planes!
How do they know the 2 killers aren't already on a flight?
Religion of Peace March <-- actual name for it
All planes were headed here??! I need to just go park my weary self on the couch and watch the t.v. news. My eyes and ears aren't synchronizing so well tonight.
see ya later, onyx.
Nope. Didn't say that.

Statement from Department of Homeland Security [UK Airline Terror Plot]
Department of Homeland Security ^ | August 10, 2006 | Secretary Michael Chertoff
Posted on 08/10/2006 12:52:41 AM PDT by HAL9000
The Department of Homeland Security is taking immediate steps to increase security measures in the aviation sector in coordination with heightened security precautions in the United Kingdom. Over the last few hours, British authorities have arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States. Currently, there is no indication, however, of plotting within the United States. We believe that these arrests have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted.
For that reason, the United States Government has raised the nations threat level to Severe, or Red, for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom bound for the United States. This adjustment reflects the Critical, or highest, alert level that has been implemented in the United Kingdom. To defend further against any remaining threat from this plot, we will also raise the threat level to High, or Orange, for all commercial aviation operating in or destined for the United States. Consistent with these higher threat levels, the Transportation Security Administration is coordinating with federal partners, airport authorities and commercial airlines on expanding the intensity of existing security requirements. Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane. This determination will be constantly evaluated and updated when circumstances warrant. These changes will take effect at 4:00 AM local time across the country. Travelers should also anticipate additional security measures within the airport and at screening checkpoints.
These measures will continue to assure that our aviation system remains safe and secure. Travelers should go about their plans confidently, while maintaining vigilance in their surroundings and exercising patience with screening and security officials.
The United States and the United Kingdom are fully united and resolute in this effort and in our ongoing efforts to secure our respective homelands.
Geraldo will be meeting the planes landing in the US interviewing passengers and looking for babies to hold while tearfully begging passport control to "let these people go"
looks like my family will be extending their stay in Britain...no flights in, major delays and cancellations of outbound flights...
Air carriers are not taxed for TSA, it's a hit to the treasury.
Didn't say that either.
If his name were Abu Akbar, I'd profile him!
Yes, ALL were headed here. Take care, Chena. I will lie down too right after the news conference.
