"protesters break into airfield and cockpit of US military transport"
ALASTAIR DALTONTRANSPORT CORRESPONDENT
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Key quote "We have been working closely with the operator of Prestwick airport for some time on the issue of security at the site. These alleged breaches are of concern and further talks were held today between myself and representatives of the airport. We have asked that they undertake a full security review and we will support them by providing expert help." - assistant chief constable Ian Learmonth of Strathclyde Police
Story in full
POLICE ordered a security review at Prestwick airport yesterday after anti-war protesters boarded a US military aircraft unchallenged.
Three members of the Trident Ploughshares group climbed on board a Hercules C130 transport plane, one of whom sat in the plane's cockpit.
They were arrested by police along with five others who were stopped elsewhere at the airport.
The latest security breach came less than 24 hours after four people were arrested when they broke through a security fence and got onto the Ayrshire airport's runway at 12:45am on Sunday."
L.A. Mayor Apologizes to Muslim Leaders
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has apologized to Muslim leaders who accused him of taking Israel's side in the violence in Lebanon by going to a pro-Israel rally and ignoring their invitations to interfaith peace vigils.
Villaraigosa met with 10 Muslim leaders Sunday and explained that a mix-up by his staff had prevented him from seeing their invitations, said his spokeswoman, Janelle Erickson.
"The mayor did apologize that the staff didn't place the meeting on his schedule sooner," said Erickson, describing Sunday's hour-long discussion as "open and friendly."
Villaraigosa called the meeting after the Muslim leaders held a news conference Friday accusing him of not representing all groups touched by the conflict.
They noted that he attended a July 23 rally by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, at which he condemned Hezbollah guerrilla rocket attacks on Israel, but failed to respond to repeated calls and e-mail invitations to interfaith vigils for people killed on both sides in Lebanon.
"It was gracious of him to say 'I apologize for the lack of communications,'" said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the Shura Council of Southern California.
The mayor pledged to visit mosques and attend events in the city's Islamic communities, and assigned one of his senior advisors as liaison to Muslim groups.

Jail for man who tried to export sensors to Iran
One year in jail does not seem like much of a deterrent if one is determined to get contraband items to Iran. But what is truly unsettling about this article is the notion that dual US-Iranian citizenship could even exist in the first place. From Reuters (sans photography):
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An American-Iranian man was sentenced to a year in prison on Monday for trying to export sensors to Iran that are normally used to detect liquid or gas pressure but could also be used to detonate explosives.
The fact that the sensors could be "used to detect liquid or gas pressure" suggests ample "dual uses" by itself.
Muhammad Fazeli, 27, pleaded guilty in May to the federal charges even though prosecutors acknowledged there was no evidence suggesting he intended the sensors to be used for military purposes.
Fazeli, who has dual American and Iranian citizenship, ordered 103 sensors from a U.S. Web site and agreed to ship the items to Iran as a favor for a family friend. His lawyers said they were typically used for medical applications.
Los Angeles-based Fazeli also apologized for his actions but U.S. District Judge George King said the devices could have fallen into the wrong hands with "very devastating consequences."
The United States has a trade embargo with Iran dating back to the 1970s that bars selling goods without U.S. authorization that could have an economic benefit to Iran.
King said he intended Fazeli's sentence to deter others who might be tempted to disregard U.S. export laws.
"The word has to get out that there's a penalty to be paid for not abiding by these restrictions," King said, not only for foreign policy reasons but also "to protect the public from potential harm."

Iran to supply Hezbollah with surface-to-air missiles: report
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
Tue, 8 Aug 2006, 00:27
London: Iran will supply Hezbollah with surface-to-air missile systems in the coming months, boosting the guerrillas' defences against Israeli aircraft, according to a report by specialist magazine Jane's Defence Weekly on Friday, citing unnamed Western diplomatic sources.
In a meeting, held late last month, the Lebanese Shiite Muslim militia called on Tehran to "accelerate and extend the scope of weapon shipments from Iran to the Islamic Resistance, particularly advanced missiles against ground and air targets."
Hezbollah's representatives pressed for "an array of more advanced weaponry, including more advanced SAM (surface-to-air missile) systems," Jane's said.
"Iranian authorities conveyed a message to the Hezbollah leadership that their forces would continue to receive a steady supply of weapons systems,"it added.
"The details coming from the meeting reveal that they are about ensuring a constant supply of weapons to support Islamic Resistance operations against Israel," said Robin Hughes, the magazine's Middle East Editor.
"We are told the latest meeting was attended by senior representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' Qods force which is responsible for training and logistic support for Iranian-backed insurgent groups."
According to Jane's Defence Weekly, Iranian authorities have supplied the militia with Iranian-made Noor radar-guided anti-ship cruise missiles and Chinese QW-1 (Vanguard) shoulder-launched SAMs.
Russian-made SAMs will reportedly be supplied at a later date."

Hackers crack new biometric passports
Hi-tech biometric passports used by Britain and other countries have been hacked by a computer expert, throwing into doubt fundamental parts of the UK's £415m scheme to load passports with information such as fingerprints, facial scans and iris patterns.
Speaking at the Defcon security conference in Las Vegas, Lukas Grunwald, a consultant with a German security company, said he had discovered a method for cloning the information stored in the new passports. Data can be transferred onto blank chips, which could then be implanted in fake passports, a flaw which he said undermined the project.

Palestinian released, IFCO arrestees will stay
Snip: Hamdan is Palestinian; he was born in a refugee camp in the West Bank when it was under Jordanian control. He was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 28, 2004; earlier he had worked as a fundraiser for the Holy Land Foundation, an Islamic charity shut down by US officials in December 2001 for allegedly raising money for Hamas, a Palestinian organization the US has designated as terrorist. Hamdan was not charged with any crimes but was ordered deported for overstaying a student visa and was held by ICE without bond as an alleged national security threat.
Hearing in Houston to feature testimony on immigrant crimes
Snip: Among the other witnesses slated for the hearing are Steve McCraw, Texas director of homeland security, who will describe the state's initiatives to curb illegal immigration. A federal official with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Houston will talk about organized crime in Mexico and how it is making its way into Texas.

France deports convicted (islamist) Tunisian
BBC News ^ | 08/08/2006

France has deported a Tunisian man to his homeland despite protests that he could face torture there. Adel Tebourski, 42, was put on an Air France flight back to Tunisia on Monday, officials said.
Tebourski had served a jail sentence in France after being convicted of helping the killers of Afghan resistance leader Ahmed Shah Masood in 2001.
The French authorities described Tebourski as a serious threat to national security.
French campaigners have said he could be tortured in Tunisia, and the UN torture committee last month called on Paris to suspend his deportation, the French news agency AFP reports.
A court in Paris handed Tebourski a six-year jail term in 2005 for offering logistical support to the killers of Masood.
During the trial, Tebourski admitted he was a member of an Islamist cell linked to one of the Tunisian killers.
Three other men were sentenced to between two and seven years by the Paris court.
Masood, a leading general in Afghanistan's anti-Taleban Northern Alliance, was blown up in 2001 by two Tunisian men posing as journalists.
The death of the man revered as the "Lion of the Panjshir Valley" stunned the country's then rebel forces, who were soon called to fight alongside US troops in a campaign against the Taleban in late 2001.
