Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

After Steven Centanni and his camera man converted to Islam; they were released shortly after.

At gunpoint, I might add.

Can anybody seriously doubt that there is a spirit of antichrist in the world, and its name is Islam?

BREAKING NEWS - U.S. Airways flight diverts to Tri-Cities after bomb threat
Published 08/28/2006 By HANK HAYES

A U.S. Airways flight diverted to Tri-Cities Regional Airport just before noon was being detained on the airport's new southside taxiway due to a bomb threat, a TCRA official said Monday afternoon.

U.S. Airways Express flight 3441, operated by Republic Airways, was on its way from Philadelphia to Houston when it was forced to land at TCRA.

The Embraer 170 aircraft departed Philadelphia at 10:10 a.m. and was scheduled to land in Houston at 12:40 p.m.

There were 55 people aboard, including the crew.

"There is a bomb threat on an aircraft," said Melissa Thomas, TCRA's director of marketing and air service development. "We were notified through air traffic control, but we don’t know yet how they were notified."

"Can anybody seriously doubt that there is a spirit of antichrist in the world, and its name is Islam?"

OPINION: Actually, I believe the anti-Christ is evil and it operates out in the open under the guise of politial correctness and it is blanketed in the spirit of tolerance.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Mon Aug 28 2006 11:56:07 GMT-0700.

IRAQ

August 28, 2006

This Travel Warning updates the current security situation and reiterates the dangers of the use of civilian aircraft and road travel within Iraq. This supersedes the Travel Warning of December 29, 2005 and the Public Announcement dated March 24, 2006.
The Department of State continues to strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq, which remains very dangerous. Remnants of the former Ba’ath regime, transnational terrorists, criminal elements and numerous insurgent groups remain active. Attacks against military and civilian targets throughout Iraq continue, including in the International (or “Green”) Zone. Targets include convoys en-route to venues, hotels, restaurants, police stations, checkpoints, foreign diplomatic missions, international organizations and other locations with expatriate personnel. These attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries of American citizens, including those doing humanitarian work. In addition, there have been planned and random killings, as well as extortions and kidnappings. U.S. citizens have been kidnapped and several were subsequently murdered by terrorists in Iraq. U.S. citizens and other foreigners continue to be targeted by insurgent groups and opportunistic criminals for kidnapping and murder. Military operations continue. There are daily attacks against Multinational Forces - Iraq (MNF-I), Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi Police throughout the country.

There is credible information that terrorists are targeting civil aviation. Civilian and military aircraft arriving at and departing from Baghdad International Airport for other major cities in Iraq have been subjected to small arms and missiles. Civilian aircraft do not generally possess systems, such as those found on military aircraft, capable of defeating man-portable, surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS). Anyone choosing to utilize civilian aircraft to enter or depart or travel within Iraq should be aware of this potential threat, as well as the extremely high risk to road transportation described below. As a result of a recent security incident at the Baghdad International Airport (BIAP), the U.S. Embassy is prohibiting all U.S. government employees from departing BIAP on commercial airlines until further notice.

All vehicular travel in Iraq is extremely dangerous. There have been numerous attacks on civilian vehicles, as well as military convoys. Attacks occur throughout the day, but travel at night is exceptionally dangerous. Travel in or through Ramadi and Fallujah; in and between al-Hillah, al-Basrah, Kirkuk, and Baghdad; between the International Zone and Baghdad International Airport; and from Baghdad to Mosul is particularly dangerous.

Occasionally, U.S. Government personnel are prohibited from traveling to certain areas depending on prevailing security conditions. There continues to be heavy use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), (especially new-type Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFP), and/or mines on roads, concealed in plastic bags, boxes, soda cans, dead animals, and in other ways to blend with the road. Grenades and explosives have been thrown into vehicles from overpasses, particularly in crowded areas. Overland travel should be undertaken only when absolutely necessary and with the appropriate security.

The U.S. Embassy is located in the International Zone. The Embassy can provide only limited emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iraq. At present, travel to and from the International Zone is extremely limited. The U.S. Embassy does not provide visa services to the general public. American citizens who choose to visit or reside in Iraq despite this Travel Warning are urged to pay close attention to their personal security, avoid crowds, especially rallies or demonstrations, and to inform the U.S. Embassy of their presence in Iraq. All Americans in Baghdad are strongly encouraged to register with the Embassy at the following website: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/home.asp.

American citizens may obtain the latest security information or other information about Iraq by calling the U.S. Embassy, located in the International Zone, via landline at: 1-240-553-0584 x5340 or x5346, via Iraqna cellular phones at 07901-732-134 or 07901-168-383, via e-mail to usconsulbaghdad@state.gov, or via the U.S. Embassy's website at http//iraq.usembassy.gov. The after-hours number in case of extreme emergency is 1-914-822-5493.

Updated information on travel and security in Iraq may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. For further information, please consult the Consular Information Sheet for Iraq, the current Worldwide Caution and the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcements, all of which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.

"Little Children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time." - 1 John 2:18

Indeed as John says there are many antichrists loose in the world.

Thank you for this link.

I find it so interesting that on our local television stations, we have the "Travel Mexico" commercials daily. Oaxaca is one of the areas that we are "encouraged" to visit. It would be nice if the commercials were followed up with a btw... there is a travel warning for this area.

I've just never felt the pull to go visit down there. It's sure close enough to me, but, no thanks!

I understand exactly what you are saying

I do believe that travel agencies and airlines should provide a copy of any Travel Warning or Public Announcement by the U.S. State Department which applies to the client's potential travel plans BEFORE booking the client on a trip or plane.

In this case, though, the State Department put our a Public Announcement online rather than a Travel Warning regarding Mexico.

Zimbabwe buys jets from China
the australian ^ | 29aug06 | Gavin du Venage

Posted on 08/28/2006 12:06:59 PM PDT by Flavius

JOHANNESBURG: Zimbabwe has bought another six fighter jets from China to replace its grounded fleet of British-made aircraft.

Secretary for Defence Trust Maposa said yesterday: "We will be receiving six aircraft from China sometime this year."

Zimbabwe already has six Chinese-made jets which were delivered last year. The aircraft are intended to fill the gap left by the Zimbabwe Air Force's ageing British-made fighters, which have been grounded due to lack of spare parts.

Britain, along with most Western countries, has imposed a ban on selling weapons to Zimbabwe, accusing the southern African country of human rights violations.

Zimbabwe has sought to get around the embargo and rearm its military with Chinese and Korean-made weaponry.

raqis to Take Control of Their Army, Air Force, Navy

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2006 – The Iraqi government is slated to assume control of its soldiers, sailors and airmen sometime next month, a senior U.S. military officer told reporters in Baghdad today.
The Iraqi Ministry of Defense, through its joint headquarters in Baghdad, will assume operational control of the Iraqi army, as well as the country’s air force and navy, in early September, Army Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell, spokesman for Multinational Force Iraq, said at a news briefing.

“This is a significant step in the Iraqi path to self-reliance and security,” Caldwell said. “What this means is that the Iraqi Ministry of Defense is prepared to begin assuming direct operational control over Iraq’s armed forces.”

Iraq’s 3-year-old armed forces have “been rebuilt from the ground up as a modern and effective fighting force,” Caldwell said. Iraqi army divisions have fought alongside coalition forces under the commander of the Multinational Corps Iraq, he added. Coalition forces also have worked to train the new Iraqi army, which now stands at about 115,000 soldiers.

The transition of control of Iraq’s armed forces to the Iraqi government should take several months, Caldwell said.

The 10 Iraqi army divisions eventually will come under the direct operational control of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, commander in chief of Iraq’s armed forces, Caldwell said.

“The majority of Iraqi (army) divisions will remain under coalition forces initially,” Caldwell explained, “and then be gradually transitioned into the Iraqi ground forces command.”
