Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Yep, it never stops -- really.

If one is a Christian, Jew, conservative, or a combination of those aforementioned traits AND one is on the 'net...the hate against us

Eight Muslim Canadian Congress board members resign
8/24/06

Eight board members of the Muslim Canadian Congress have resigned their positions, apparently over internal disagreements about a Lebanon war protest at which Hezbollah flags and photos were displayed.

"They resigned after the board passed a non-confidence motion against them," said Tarek Fatah, the congress' former communications director who is speaking for the organization until his position is filled.

"We went to the (Aug. 12) demonstration and found that there were Hezbollah flags and pictures of the Iranian president," Fatah said.

"They (the resigned members) are Canadian supporters of Hezbollah ... This sort of blind following is not acceptable to us."

Seven Suspected Terrorists Killed in Afghanistan

American Forces Press Service

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 24, 2006 – Seven suspected al Qaeda facilitators were killed early today when Afghan and coalition forces conducted an operation on a compound housing suspected terrorists near the village of Asmar in Kunar province, U.S. military officials reported.
Afghan and coalition forces came under direct fire when approaching the compound and defended themselves with return fire. Afghan and coalition forces continued to take fire from hostile forces in the surrounding area after the initial objective was secured.

All of the men killed were engaging Afghan and coalition forces with hostile fire.

A child, about 10 to 12 years old, was killed and a woman was wounded during the fighting. An investigation is being conducted to determine the identities of these individuals. Four other males in the compound were also taken into custody.

The additional enemy fighters fled the site when engaged by the Afghan and coalition unit.

The woman who was wounded during the fighting was immediately evacuated to a nearby coalition medical facility for treatment.

“The al Qaeda fighters deliberately put women and children at risk in an effort to protect their illegal and immoral operations,” said Army Col. Thomas Collins, coalition spokesman.

Multiple weapons, ammunition and grenades were confiscated in the operation.

The purpose of this operation was to capture a known al Qaeda facilitator, officials said. Credible intelligence linked the targeted individual to suspected terrorist activities and attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kunar province.

Iraqi, U.S. Forces Foil Attack, Capture Terrorists, Disarm Explosives

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24, 2006 – In separate operations this week throughout Iraq, Iraqi and U.S. forces stopped a terrorist attack against a police station, captured five suspected terrorists, and disarmed seven improvised explosive devices, U.S. military officials reported.
Iraqi police and Task Force Band of Brothers soldiers thwarted a terrorist attack against a Mosul police station yesterday.

The attack began when a terrorist dressed as a police officer approached the gate to the police station and detonated his suicide vest, killing himself and wounding six police officers.

Immediately following the explosion, two other masked terrorists attempted to attack the station with small-arms fire. Soldiers from the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, quickly identified and engaged the gunmen, killing both.

The wounded police officers were transported to a nearby coalition medical facility.

Elsewhere, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained five suspected terrorists after being attacked by small-arms fire at about 11 a.m. Aug. 22 in the neighborhood of Saab Al Bour, just north of Baghdad.

The soldiers also confiscated three AK-47s, a PKC with a sniper scope, and ammunition. The detainees are being held for questioning.

In a series of Aug. 21 operations, Iraqi army and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers discovered and destroyed seven improvised explosive devices in and around Baghdad.

Iraqi army soldiers found and disarmed an IED at about 10 a.m. in an area south of Baghdad. An explosive ordnance team from 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, destroyed the device.

In another incident, soldiers from 2nd BCT located an IED on the side of a road southeast of Iskandariyah at about 9:30 a.m. An EOD team detonated the 152 mm round.

Soldiers from 8th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, found a roadside bomb consisting of a 122 mm mortar round partially buried in a main thoroughfare of Ameriyah at about 11:20 a.m. The device was removed and destroyed by an EOD team.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, noticed a copper wire coming out of the ground and leading back to a house nearby while conducting a reconnaissance mission near Najaf at about 8:10 a.m. Upon inspection, they discovered the wire ran to a firing position previously used for explosive devices and to a second explosive device. An EOD team disarmed and destroyed the explosive devices.

In a similar incident at about 11:50 a.m., soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, found a 152 mm IED on the side of a rural road near Hjaddah in the far northern suburbs of Baghdad. An EOD team destroyed the roadside bomb.

In another incident, soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, discovered an IED buried in the middle of a busy road in Yusufiyah while conducting a route-clearance mission at about 2 p.m. The 120 mm mortar round was unearthed and destroyed by an EOD team.

Philippine troops kill 6 Muslim rebels in dawn raid
MANILA, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Philippine troops killed at least 6 Muslim guerrillas after a dawn swoop on their camp on the remote southwestern island of Jolo, a senior military official said on Thursday.

Around 3,000 troops, backed by U.S. equipment and intelligence, are hunting about 200 militants from the Abu Sayyaf group, who regularly set up camp in the interior jungles of Jolo. Two Indonesians suspected of carrying out deadly bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 are also believed to be hiding out with them.

Musharraf faces bitter clash over rape law reforms
By Isambard Wilkinson in Peshawar
(Filed: 25/08/2006)

President Pervez Musharraf has opened a new and especially bitter confrontation with radical Islam by trying to rewrite Pakistan's controversial rape laws.

These place an almost impossible burden of proof on women by compelling them to produce four "pious" male witnesses to prove rape or risk being convicted of adultery and face 100 lashes or death by stoning.

This law, known as the Hudood Ordinance, has been regarded as untouchable since its passage 27 years ago.

Man with backpack sparks security alert

Thinking of other modes of transportation where backpacks are accepted and typically not searched, including ferries. Also, since kids use backpacks for school supplies/books, they are a frequent sight at malls and restaurants.

What's really driving the Fox News kidnapping

Snip: The true motivation behind the kidnapping, say these security sources, was to discredit both Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority — who rashly told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that he could free the pair of journalists swiftly — and Ismael Haniyeh, the Palestinian prime minister, whose Hamas-led government has tried to crack down on Fatah splinter groups' roaming death squads and extortion rackets in Gaza.

In addition, the Holy Jihad Brigades is hoping that by staging a high-publicity kidnapping of foreigners, they may attract the largess of the Lebanese militia group, Hizballah. In recent months, say Israeli intelligence officials, Hizballah has started to bankroll a wide array of Palestinian groups in Gaza and the West Bank in their battle against Israeli forces, and the Brigades may be hoping to join this lucrative club.

Islamists open militia camp

Snip: Witnesses identified foreign trainers from Eritrea, Pakistan and Afghanistan at the camp.

Diplomats feared that Somalia could become a proxy battleground for Ethiopia and Eritrea, and had said that more players like Libya, Iran and Egypt had quietly entered the fray.

Koran used to justify cleric soliciting murder

Snip: Abu Hamza, who recently won the right to appeal his conviction, was jailed in the UK for inciting racial hatred and soliciting murder. Hamza claims he has been victimized for his religious beliefs and his attorney is said to be using a novel defense. Edward Fitzgerald, Hamas’ attorney who has complained about the conduct of virtually everyone involved in prosecuting his client’s case, is reported to be using the Koran as his defense strategy. Fitzgerald is said to have stated that since the Muslim Koran teaches the murder of infidels, his client was and is only following and preaching his religious beliefs.

A Muslim thought

Snip: Believe me, american and european people want to exterminate us, they can't since only God has the power to do such a thing. However, God tells us to fight and resist any aggresor.

I can't help but be worried that Iranian exiles are probably our best intelligence on what is going on there. I would feel much better if we had a good track record in this area recently.

It's amazing how quickly things are moving over there.

I still fear that the next attack here will coincide with some major outbreak of war in the Middle East. Lebanon was just a precursor... the virus is spreading.

...content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

If I were the head of Israel I would consider this a direct act of war against my country and bomb the crap out of them until they beg for mercy and call Allah the devil. I.E. until all the Syrians were dust.

Invention targets terrorist weapons

Snip: University of Wyoming researchers have developed and patented a technology that can rapidly detect explosives such as the liquid compounds that were part of a recently-thwarted plot to detonate bombs on as many as 10 U.S.-bound airliners.

Pat Sullivan, a professor in the UW Department of Chemistry, is one of three scientists who received a patent for sensors that can be made to rapidly detect volatile chemical targets.

"We have developed a portable, lightweight system that can detect explosives used in bombs, accelerants used in arsons, biological species used in biological weapons, if fact, it can be used to detect any compound for which an antibody can be made," says Sullivan, who holds the patent along with Lew Noe, UW professor emeritus of chemistry, and former UW Professor John Bowen, now on the faculty at the University of Central Oklahoma. "Even more important, this technology can detect specific compounds in liquids and in air and could be applied to prevent terrorist acts."

Texas sheriffs say terrorists entering US from Mexico

Snip: Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez of Zapata County, Texas told Cybercast News Service that Iranian currency, military badges in Arabic, jackets and other clothing are among the items that have been discovered along the banks of the Rio Grande River. The sheriff also said there are a substantial number of individuals crossing the southern border into the U.S. who are not Mexican. He described the individuals in question as well-funded and able to pay so-called "coyotes" - human smugglers - large sums of money for help gaining illegal entry into the U.S.

Iran mullahs' agents obtain German guidance gear, shared with hezbollah in Lebanon
Aug 24, 2006

Iran has obtained German guidance gear for its drones. A prosecutor disclosed in Dusseldorf Monday, just hours after the revelation that Britain had supplied night-vision equipment to Iran which ended up in the hands of Hezbollah fighters.

Johannes Mocken, the prosecutor in Dusseldorf, said Tehran had obtained the global positioning systems (GPS) through Iranian merchants living in Germany.

The delivery was first reported by a German television current-affairs programme, Fakt, which said seven German-made systems were exported but German authorities managed to stop three more.

The systems use signals from satellites to help fly unmanned aircraft. Hezbollah deployed several drones of unknown origin in its recent month of fighting with Israel.

"We have to assume that the persons under investigation either knew perfectly well or knowingly made no effort to prevent these GPS systems reaching Iran's military drone programme," Mocken said.

Fakt quoted sources saying Hezbollah had deployed the drones against Israel and might deploy them against German Navy ships that are likely to be sent to the Lebanese coast if a peacekeeping mission is approved.

British reports Monday said Israel has complained at finding night-vision gear stamped "Made in Britain" in Hezbollah command bunkers in southern Lebanon. Britain officially sold the 250 night-vision systems to Iran in 2003 for use against drug smugglers.
