"U.S. terror group ignored amid raised threat?
Investigator says domestic cells involved in 9-11 still in business"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Amid heightened security after Hezbollah threats and the foiled UK plot, an independent investigator of the Oklahoma City bombing contends a terrorist network allied with the Lebanese group and al-Qaida allegedly responsible for more attacks on U.S. soil in the past 20 years than any other terrorist organization remains a danger because of neglect by U.S. authorities.
Jamaat al-Fuqra, a Pakistani-based group with thousands of American members, has worked closely with Hezbollah, al-Qaida, Hamas and others on attacks in the U.S. including the bombings of the World Trade Center in 1993, Oklahoma City's Murrah Federal Building in 1995 and the 9-11 attacks but remains conspicuously absent from the State Department's terrorist list, asserts Oklahoma-based researcher Patrick Briley.
A former investigative aide to the late Adm. Hyman Rickover, Briley has poured himself into the Oklahoma City bombing case for the past decade, concluding the piles of evidence he has passed on to authorities through attorneys clearly points to the controversial conclusion Islamic terrorists used Americans Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols to carry out the plot.
Al-Fuqra, he says, is a key part of an Oklahoma City terrorist network that has participated in major attacks in the U.S. and most importantly remains in operation today."

President's Radio Address

In Focus: Homeland Security
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week, America received a stark reminder that terrorists are still plotting attacks to kill our people. Beginning on Wednesday night, authorities in Great Britain arrested more than 20 individuals who we believe were plotting to detonate liquid explosives aboard flights from the United Kingdom to the United States. If these terrorists had succeeded, they could have caused death on a massive scale. The plot appears to have been carefully planned and well-advanced. They planned to bring the components of their explosives on board in their carry-on luggage, disguised as bottled drinks and electronic devices.
We believe that this week's arrests have significantly disrupted the threat. Yet we cannot be sure that the threat has been eliminated. So as a precaution, on Thursday, the federal government took several steps to increase security at our airports and aboard our planes.
First, the Department of Homeland Security has raised our Nation's threat warning to Code Red -- the highest level -- for flights from Great Britain to America, in coordination with British authorities. Second, we've raised the threat warning for all domestic and international flights landing in the United States to Code Orange -- the second highest level. We also have sent additional federal air marshals to Great Britain to provide extra protection aboard flights from the United Kingdom to the United States.
This plot is further evidence that the terrorists we face are sophisticated, and constantly changing their tactics. On September the 11th, 2001, they used box cutters to hijack airplanes and kill thousands of innocent people. This time, we believe they planned to use liquid explosives to blow up planes in mid-air. In response, we've adjusted our security precautions by temporarily banning most liquids as carry-on items on planes. I know many of you will be traveling during this busy summer vacation season, and I ask for your patience, cooperation, and vigilance in the coming days. The inconveniences you will face are for your protection, and they will give us time to adjust our screening procedures to meet the current threat.
I'm grateful for the outstanding work of intelligence and law enforcement officers in the United Kingdom and in our country. This week's arrests were the culmination of hard work, cooperation, and information-sharing across different agencies and different governments. We're dealing with a new enemy that uses new means of attack and new methods to communicate. This week's events demonstrate the vital importance of ensuring that our intelligence and law enforcement personnel have all the tools they need to track down the terrorists, and prevent attacks on our country.
Because of the measures we've taken to protect the American people, our Nation is safer than it was prior to September the 11th. Still, we must never make the mistake of thinking the danger of terrorism has passed. This week's experience reminds us of a hard fact: The terrorists have to succeed only once to achieve their goal of mass murder, while we have to succeed every time to stop them. Unfortunately, some have suggested recently that the terrorist threat is being used for partisan political advantage. We can have legitimate disagreements about the best way to fight the terrorists, yet there should be no disagreement about the dangers we face.
America is fighting a tough war against an enemy whose ruthlessness is clear for all to see. The terrorists attempt to bring down airplanes full of innocent men, women, and children. They kill civilians and American servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they deliberately hide behind civilians in Lebanon. They are seeking to spread their totalitarian ideology. They're seeking to take over countries like Afghanistan and Iraq so they can establish safe havens from which to attack free nations. These killers need to know that America, Great Britain, and our allies are determined to defend ourselves and advance the cause of liberty. With patience, courage, and untiring resolve, we will defend our freedom, and we will win the war on terror.
Thank you for listening.

Four Missionaries Tortured in Yunan Province
By Michael Ireland
Special Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
YUNAN PROVINCE, CHINA (ANS) -- Four missionaries have been arrested by the local police in Wuyi Township, Mengla County, Jinghong City, Yunan Province charged with "superstitious activity."
According to the Midland, Texas-based China Aid Association (CAA), the head of the local police station, who was allegedly drunk that evening, and ten policemen tortured the four missionaries from 8 PM, July 24 until 2 AM the next day. One female missionary had her hair torn out.
"In this remote area, where it is far from the emperor, I can beat you until you obey. You have nowhere to lodge a complaint," the police threatened.
The police even discussed handing over the two women missionaries to a minority tribe to rape them.
CAA says the police handcuffed the four missionaries to chairs in their office and left them there until 2 PM, July 25, 2006, when they were escorted to Mengla County National Security Guard squad office.
"The police could not prove they had committed any crime so they set them free at 8 PM, July 25, 2006, after searching their pockets. The police confiscated $400 in cash, Bibles, and hymn disks and did not issue any receipts," says a CAA report obtained By ANS.
It adds: "The 4 missionaries were in so much pain they could hardly walk out the gate of the National Security Guard office. They stated that they did not think they would survive the interrogation."
The 4 missionaries are: Xing Baoying and Wang Guizhen from Luohe, Henan; Li Jianying from Jinghong town, Jinghong city; Li Tuying from Jinghong Farm. Xing Baoying and Wang Guizhen were just released on March 10, 2006 from the Reeducation through Labor camp, where they served their sentence of 2 years because of religious sake.
Sister Wang Guizhen was converted in 1984. 10 years after her conversion she studied in southern China Theological Seminary. She worked for the
Three-Self church for 1 year after graduation. In 1999, Sister Wang left the Three-Self church, and started serving in house churches. Sister Wang Guizhen and her husband, brother Xing Baoying were arrested on July 25, 2004. They endured cruel torture in the custody centre. They were later put into Re-education through labor camp for 2 years because of sister Wang refused to cooperate with the Three-Self church. Sister Wang Guizhen and Brother Xing Baoying had just been released in March 2006.
CAA calls upon the international community to protest the treatment of these persecuted Christians and the atrocities of the local policemen.

Deep inside city jails, top cops keep a watchful eye out for terror
BY ROBERT F. MOORE
New York Daily News
DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU
Sunday, August 13th, 2006
An elite group of correction officers, cops and federal agents is closely monitoring suspected radicals at city jails to prevent them from recruiting angry and isolated prisoners into their fold.
Authorities believe the jails, along with prisons across the nation, could become fertile recruiting grounds for homegrown jihadists who follow the teachings of Osama Bin Laden and other Islamic terrorists.
Aware of the great risk, city correction bosses created the specialized intelligence unit on Rikers Island to stop fanatics before they can indoctrinate others.
"We aggressively monitor all security risk groups," Martin Horn, who runs the city's Department of Correction, told the Daily News. "We have our own intelligence unit and we're always looking at inmate alliances."
Last week's arrest of dozens of accused Islamic terrorists - most of them Britons who allegedly plotted to blow up airliners bound for New York and other U.S. cities - underscores the growing threat of homegrown extremists.
Even before the terrorist ring was exposed, FBI Director Robert Mueller warned that radical Islamists had been spreading their depraved philosophy behind bars in the U.S.
"Inmates may be drawn to an extreme form of Islam because it may help justify their violent tendencies," Mueller said this summer. "These persons represent a heightened threat because of their criminal histories, their propensity for violence and their contacts with criminals."
Mueller said there are more than 5,000 extremist Web sites that prisoners, in varying degrees, can gain access to. That exposure, along with active recruitment, has helped change the face of terror.
Evidence that prisons are helping spread the murderous ideology of terrorists has been mounting for years.
In 2002, Brooklyn-born terror suspect Jose Padilla was arrested after stepping off a flight from Pakistan in Chicago's O'Hare Airport for allegedly plotting to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb."
Padilla - whose Al Qaeda handlers included 9/11 plotter Khalid Shaikh Mohammed - turned away from his Catholic upbringing and converted to Islam while in a Florida jail in the early 1990s, authorities said.
Just last year, four suspected terrorists were arrested in California for allegedly plotting to attack military recruiting centers and Jewish synagogues.
Two of the accused jihadists met while incarcerated in Folsom State Prison and were part of a radical group, Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheed or JIS, which was founded in the California prison in 1997, the feds said.
The plot included a string of armed robberies committed to raise money for the terrorist group, while its leader, Kevin James, was still incarcerated.
James, a U.S. citizen, called on his followers to attack the "infidels" and supporters of Israel, authorities said.
"The indictment of these suspects shows the importance of law enforcement agencies working together. The prison system is a big part of that," said Elaine Jennings, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections.
Prison officials in many states have been monitoring Muslim inmates since the 9/11 attacks. But the Rikers Island intelligence unit is among the most sophisticated.
Since being created two years ago, the unit's investigators have not detected a significant threat, but authorities and experts say the surveillance is a vital part of the city's defense against terrorism.
"Prisons are incubators for extremist ideology," said Steven Emerson, a counterterrorism expert based in Washington. "There's no recognition of the problem in federal prisons. And there's no national oversight of the state prison system."
Those who disagree with Emerson include noted Imam Johari Addul-Malik, who counsels inmates in Washington.
"I don't think the radicalization of Islam is happening in prison in any systematic way," Addul-Malik said.
Abdul-Malik noted that Islam has a long history in America of playing a positive role in reforming criminals, including Malcolm X. But he acknowledged "there are some who misuse Islam as a cover to influence people to commit crimes of all types."
Several elected officials, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), have long called for the hiring of more Arabic speakers to help collect intelligence on federal inmates.
The Justice Department also has chided the federal Bureau of Prisons for failing to conduct background checks on imams who counsel prisoners.
City correction officials conduct background checks on clerics of all faiths. But a New York State prison source told The News that correction officers remain concerned about the influence of imams, especially those who work in prisons upstate.
The source said jailers are often unable to monitor the imams or even the discussions of some prisoners because of language barriers and concerns over charges of discrimination.

I agree, although maybe not simultaneous. What about sequential events, the planes first, then railroads, then highway bridges.
First reports said loss of life would be 'unimaginable'. That sounds ominous. Plus we are getting a lot of information about the Egyptian students and the cell phones. Up until recently we've received very little information. Why are they letting this information out now?
I suspect the planes were phase I and the government isn't sure if phase II and Phase III will go ahead.

Not only that, but they were removing the chargers and other packing/instructional materials. Even if you're not aware of the Wal-Mart price, you'd have to be really dumb to buy a phone like that at that price.
What's not so clear is that they were up to terrorism - drugs for example would be about equally plausible given the information we have. What's not plausible is that they were actually planning to sell them.

Hizballah web site updates, 12 August 2006
UPDATE 12 AUGUST 2006: Alabanza/Bulkregister appears to have pulled the plug on more than a dozen domains of Hizballah. They continue to service one or two, but it's possible that was an oversight on their part.
ghaliboun.net is now in Malaysia, while the mirror site moqawama.tv is (still) in Utah. Both are serviced by American companies.
almanar.com.lb is (still) in Iran, while manartv.com.lb is (back) in Montreal.
At the moment, something like 90% of the web sites of Hizballah are offline.

Yep.
QUESTION:
Did any of you come across anything about some terrorist cell and/or arrests in TORRANCE, CA????
I was watching FoxNews yesterday and they mentioned a few places, including the arrests of these ME men with the cellphones who planned to blow up the bridge in Michigan, and mentioned Torrance, CA. I perked up (it's in Los Angeles county, in greater LA) and wondered if I had heard it right, then they put up a map of the US where terror cells were found -- it only had about 4-5 locations, but Torrance, CA was definitely one of them. This is the first I heard of it, and couldn't find anything on it on the internet.
If any of you know any more, could you please post it and ping me. Thanks very much.
I live in LA, less than 20 miles from Torrance, so I would like to find out more about it.
I searched and searched and did find this:
http://fpc.state.gov/fpc/64480.htm
"What you've seen then in the shift over those period of years is that it has gone, in some degree, from being a group with a strong organizational structure almost to a movement or a state of mind. What we see that shift evidencing itself in is events like the Madrid train bombings or the London bombings, either the first instance or the second instance or a case that we had experienced in Torrance, California in the Los Angeles area where a terrorism cell spawned itself from a cell, a prison cell in Folsom Prison where a particular leader appointed himself, recruited others, and then as they got out of jail, sent them out to recruit more and to plan attacks and did so, including obtaining the weapons, selecting the targets, the financing and so on. "
It's interesting it received no publicity.
Allowed to leave after making a statement like he did? Hmmmm.
