DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told the Syrian military on Monday to raise its readiness, pledging not to abandon support for Lebanese resistance against Israel.

"We are facing international circumstances and regional challenges that require caution, alert, readiness and preparedness," Assad said.

"The barbaric war of annihilation the Israeli aggression is waging on our people in Lebanon and Palestine is increasing in ferocity," Assad said in a written address on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the Syria Arab Army.

If Syria crosses the Golan Heights frontier we will witness what a nuclear weapon might do to a population center which is Damascus. The Israelis are not fooling around and they will use nuclear weapons is they are forced.

Israel has been fighting these guys forever. Why would Syria's involvement initiate Israel's use of the atom?

Why would Syria's involvement initiate Israel's use of the atom?

Syria can overwhelm Israel's army. We fielded tactical nuclear weapons in West Germany because the Soviet Union fielded more men and equipment than NATO.If they crossed the Fulda Gap, the Americans would have no choice to use nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons is the great equalizer. You can vaporize a half of million men and equipment in less than a millisecond. The tactical weapons would be in low kioton yield not the big mega bombs.

There is a also a possibility that Syria would use chemical weapons and then Israel would have no choice to retaliate with nuclear weapons.

Chances are Al-Assad may rue the day he backed Hezbollah. They have led him to the brink, and he may have to jump.

Yes, Assad and Lahud can go jump together.

I give it a 50/50 chance that Syria gets involved in this. Bashar surely knows that the IDF will decimate the Syrian Army using only conventional weapons, but political pressures from the remaining members of the Axis of Evil may push him over the edge. The results would be similar to the Egyptian Army advance across the Sinai after they had taken the canal in 1973. Sadat knew it was a mistake to move beyond that range of his SAM's, but did it anyway because of political pressure from Syria.

I agree with your assessment but this can spiral into the use of nuclear weapons quickly.

The Ottomans attacked Constantinople in 1453 with a force of approximately 100,000 men.

Thank you Max in Utah for the reference. We are a couple of engineers that obviously spent too much time with our slide rules..

I think the key is in your opening. Israel will respond in kind as we would if nulear or other WMDs are used against us.

I don't think Iran has nuclear weapons, nor does NK but Syria undoubtedly has WMDs. Probably, nerve gas etc.

When you hear that our forces are on high alert you know something is up.

Does Syria have an air force or air defence capabilities?

They have Russian Migs that are badly in need of parts, as been reported here.

What's more important is they have generals who remember the @ss whupping they got the last time from Israel...

I think Assad is between a rock and hard place. He is basically a coward. He will not go all out against Israel but "test" the water with them.

Our Defense Intelligence Agency, the CIA and others believe that NK has between 3-10 nukes.....

Remember, these are the same folks that totally missed the entire Pakistani nuclear program. They discovered Pakistan went nuclear after an underground test.

Iran?

Tehran would look like that too.

Don't forget Mecca, Medina, Riyahd...Saudi Arabia is THE number one source of Islamic evil in the world!

It sorta sux to kill the Christian Syrians, but they are not smart enough to leave, so be it! If they are true Christians, their suffering will be small and they will ascend to Heaven while the Muslim swine burn in the lake of fire.

When Israel extends from the Great Sea to the Euphrates...our Lord shall return!

Assad must be chewing down on magic mushrooms to do something this stupid. For all its weaknesses dealing with urban terrorists who are suicidally zealous, Syria is the kind of adversary israel finishes before lunch. And right now the IDF will welcome a chance to feel good again.

"Evil forces are converging on the US and Israel. Russia and China would benefit, Europe would hide under their bed...

This is going to be ugly..."

Good analysis of NK probably supplying Iran, Syria being puppeted etc and the tie in with Russia/China. The USA is countering the superpowers moves by arming Japan, Taiwan, Poland etc. We have a real need to unbury our head out of the sand and take countermeasures to the economic & proxy war waged from China and building our own alternative energy supply to counter Russia's global energy influence. Will these things happen? Probably not. Our countries leadership is about personal power & greed first and America 2nd.

"Indeed. Redlegs Rule! Annie was at Sill the last time I was there just under 30 years ago in the outdoor museum artillery park. I think the 155mm nuke has only been tested underground to make sure it will go 'boom'. I spent a couple of years at Sill playing with those toys. BTW, did you know about the time in the '50s when a 240mm round was fired out of safe into the intersection of Sheridan and Gore?"

I was watching Modern Marvels the other night and they just built the first ever GPS guided artillery gun/shells. No where to run, no where to hide.

"Hope is the weakest virtue, but we hope they can keep a lid on it."

I agree. Although I see postings of fireballs here, a nuclear exchange anywhere in the world will be a catastrophic loss of life and will directly change our American way of life. How do you think Wall Street will handle this news? How about me as an employer? I would lay off half my staff and hope to ride out the global economic storm...
