Stephanie Drinkard is a single stay-at-home mom with two little girls. She moved back to Nacogdoches a month ago from Louisiana. There, she was on Section 8 housing, food stamps, and Medicaid, but she can't get that help in Texas because of a contest she won back in October.
"I went online and entered," said Drinkard. "I didn't know I was gonna win it. Only like two people won - it was me and somebody else - but it's a 2006 Limited Edition Toyota Avalon and it's like a $40,000 car."
And $40,000 exceeds the limit the

And? Is this supposed to make us think she should get welfare? It doesn't.
I managed to sit through the whole thing. Loved that tattoo on her neck! These poor folks who get tattoos on their necks and then wonder why they can't get a job.
And it doesn't look like her food budget has been suffering. I don't know what she'd feeding her kids but she's eating a hell of a lot more than ramen noodles and rice!
How does she plan to pay the taxes on the prize? Oh! I know; she doesn't!
That $40,000 car will cost her $6,000 or $7,000 in taxes. She is probably too ignorant to realize that. Wait until she does her taxes next April, she will be in for some real sticker shock.
A few years ago Oprah gave away cars to her studio audience. I bet only 10 or 15 percent of them realized those cars came with a tax burden. I wonder how many of them had to sell off the cars or take out loans to pay off the tax debt.
Actually they pay when they file for that year. There's a spot for winnings on your 1040 form. No doubt she left that spot blank when (or if) she filed last year. I wonder if the IRS watched this particular newscast?
I doubt he'll buy her some rims but he'll probably steal a set for her when he gets out of lockup.
20 years ago, my roommate and I lived in a real crapped apt. Drugheads coming by all the time because we had electricity. Afraid to piss them off too much becuase we worked to pay the bills and had to leave for work, and didn't want to lose everything.
After a year of this, I was washing clothes at a laundermat, because the dipheads kept trashing the one on site, when a car crashed through the glass front while I was washing clothes. I wasn't hurt, but I took this as a sign from GOD to get OUT. Turned in the notice the next day and left by end of month.
It's something I've said again and again, you've just written it. People who had kids out of wedlock like idiot teens, etc. would work to help the middle class function. Now the middle class pays for her education while the middle class struggles to survive.
Glad to hear your BP is o.k. When you said you had heart problems that was the first thing that came into my mind. Good for you avoiding salt--I'm really working on that.
Reading this thread it appears work isn't a popular word in this single mother's vocabulary. I've been there and it's amazing what hard work, penny pinching and discipline can accomplish. I've been retired for almost 12 years, living very comfortably, but still pinching those pennies! Old habits are hard to lose.
No they don't. They pay taxes on the prize when they file their income tax return.
Over the years I have won numerous large prizes, 2 trips to Cancun, a 7 day cruise, $1000.00, a pair of airline tickets, etc.
In 2005 I also won 6 microdermabrasion treatments from a plastic surgeons office. When I received a 1099 stating the value was $850.00 I knew that was an overinflated value. I crossed out the amount on the 1099, wrote in a more reasonable value and sent it in with my income tax return.
