In an open letter posted on a Gush Katif forum web site, Y. S. wrote, "I closed my business since the beginning of the battle and I don't know what will happen. I never thought that I, a Haifa resident for 30 years, would be a refugee in my own land.
"During five years you coped with bombs, and I didn't care. Even when you came to visit me in my house, to explain, to convince, to share your feelings with me, I refused to listen to you.
"People from Gush Katif and the Shomron! Forgive me! Forgive us for not understanding you. I am not a religious man, and not a mystic person." The Haifa resident concluded that his problems are "the price that I am paying now for my late understanding."
(Gush Karif was one of the Israeli townsips in Gaza.)

Lebanon: U.N. appeals for safe passage NAQOURA, Lebanon, July 25 (UPI) -- The U.N. mission in Lebanon remains a target amid Hezbollah-Israeli fighting, while U.N. agencies report difficulty moving humanitarian aid into Lebanon.
The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon said Tuesday four members of its Ghanaian battalion were injured Monday evening when a tank round from the Israeli side impacted inside their position south of Rmaich, causing severe damage. The four were evacuated to the UNIFIL hospital in Naqoura, and remain in stable condition.
There were six other attacks close to UNIFIL positions from the Israeli side during the past 24 hours, UNIFIL said.
The U.N. refugee agency meanwhile reports that it has been unable to move relief supplies intended for more than 20,000 displaced persons into Lebanon. The aid has been transported to the Syria-Lebanon border from a holding center in Jordon, but the agency awaits the opening of safe passages.
"It is enormously frustrating to be right on the back doorstep of Lebanon and ready to move in with hundreds of tons of aid, but the door remains closed," spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commission for Refugees Jennifer Pagonis told reporters in Geneva. Once the agency is allowed safe access, Pagonis said, the supplies could reach Lebanese civilians in a matter of hours.
U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland is in the region to assess the humanitarian situation and negotiate the opening of humanitarian corridors. The trip took him to Lebanon Monday and to the Gaza Strip Tuesday. On Wednesday he will travel to the Israeli city of Haifa, which has been a steady target of Hezbollah missiles.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, also in the region, has appealed for better access for humanitarian workers seeking to deliver aid to Lebanese civilians caught in the crossfire.

But remember, the Israelis know where those missiles came from. Moving a launcher is a fairly trivial matter, moving Damascus could get a bit tricky.
The whole reason asymetrical warfare works is that the enemy doesn't have any fixed location that you can hit back at. In the Iraq war, Israel didn't hit back because we asked (warned) them not to. There wouldn't be similar restrictions regarding Syria. Israel's vulnerability in terms of large fixed population districts is precisely matched by Syria's.

Admin - thanks for posting the stratfor article. And once again they have done a great job analyzing the situation. However, i think they have oversimplified the Hizbullah war strategy, at least from a tactical point of view. I think Nasarallah will attempt to pull off a couple more surprises (overseas terrorism against Israeli interest or a missile attack into TelAviv) should the IDF come in force and subdue his short range rocket threat.

Witness this conflict, and compare it to the last. The West Bank offensive was hauled up short, right when it was becoming effective, because Israel could not claim the moral high ground, and the US reined them in.
This time around, Bush has set his feet in concrete, we're looking for a long term solution to the Hezbollah problem.
This could not have happened if Israel was still occupying Lebanon. Because they pulled out, and then were attacked unilaterally, the political equation changes in Israel's favor.
Give the enemy what they say they want, then when they try to take more by force, annihilate them, once and for all.
Admittedly, this is a highly unlikely scenario, but if Assad thinks he is on the way out anyhow, does he really care about what happens to Damascus. . .
A second term in the equation + for Israel is the reluctance of Lebanon to enforce 1559.
