INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.
Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.
The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.
Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.
Did you notice in the article, where it says she was about five feet away when she HEARD a crash? She didn't see anything. Maybe if she was looking at her kid she would've actually seen what was about to happen.
Freak accidents happen, even to perfect parents like you be careful in what you boast because, Lord forbid, someday you or someone you love might need a compassionate friend after such an accident..
I'm still here, I made it to 21 because my mom kept an eye on me. Both my brothers are still in perfect health because mom made sure we all behaved. My oldest brother keeps a hawk eye on his little girl now, just like my mom did with us.
My Wife gets the stuff we came for in the second cart.
This is EXACTLY how we did things when my kids were little. When my kids got older, I used that as an excuse to stay at home with the kids and let my wife go by herself (she actually ENJOYS Walmart - i think it might be a mental illness).
That being said, we've always given our kids a little more responsibility (and earned freedom) than their over-protected friends. This would manifest itself in very small ways when they were younger - including letting them get out of the cart within our site. So far, they're still alive, and MUCH more mature than their friends.
Being a father, I've viewed my role as slowly preparing them to no longer need me, starting from Toddler-hood. I've always been there to bail them out (and teach a lesson), and as they get older I bail them out less and let them feel the consequences of bad decisions. Yes, they could get hurt, but they could also get hurt with me hovering over them. I have more to say on this subject, but I don't want to come off as an Uber-parent (from the other end). Sorry if I have. To each his own.
"It is likely that the mirror was hanging without much support and fell from the nails or clips which were used to secure it."
"A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a FLOOR-MOUNTED mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart." See my post 71.
I've been saying it as well, but too few are willing to look at this event in that light.
That's why you WATCH them.
Again, Mom was 5 ft away obviously looking at something since the article says this: The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash. If he had been next to her, he wouldn't have been near the mirror. She wasn't even looking at him since she only heard the crash.
Well, at least this toddler's death was good for something.
It gave us all a chance to hear you preen what a superior parent you are.
7 years of good luck for lawyers,
Sadly people leave items all over stores with no thought to what might happen with it being at that location.
Someone easily might have had the mirror in their cart.
They then decided against purchasing it.
They casually left it in the toy section, and this "could" be why a child is gone forever.

Quoted post not mine. :)
My postings have been all about how the parent should have been watching the child a bit closer.
If she had been watching him, she would've seen him, not just heard the crash.
You are so hellbent on laying the blame on this woman that you absolutely refuse to accept the possibility the mirror could have fallen whether the kid was there or not....or if the mother, or someone else was standing there.
This woman just lost her child and all you care about is painting her as a negligent parent ebcause she didn't do exactly what you deem she should have been doing.
You weren't there, I wasn't there, there is not enough information in the article to lay blame on ANYONE.
No. I was a careful parent as I was taught to be.
Tragedy can happen in a heartbeat and you cannot replace a child.
I keep seeing posts from other posters about keeping children less than a foot away. When I have tried doing that with five children we get dirty looks for blocking the aisles.
So answer the question do you let your kids get more thn 3 feet away from you at church?
No parent is more careful than I. I watch my children like a hawk.
Yet, I do not feel the reflexive need to condemn this woman for being a bad mother, nor to compare her unfavorably to me. Silly me.
He was not the only one, heck there are 21yo's with no kids telling us what great parents they are on this thread..
