Ends with a perspicacious comment:

The real issue is who will set the agenda for the Middle East: Iran or America?

"“I invite the faithful to wait for good news,” Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last Tuesday. “We shall soon witness the elimination of the Zionist stain of shame.”

I have a strange foreboding that this madman has something big planned for August 22. There were some threads earlier this week about the significance of this date for those awaiting the return of the 12th imam.

I hope and pray he doesn't launch some nukes at Tel Aviv.

In its power base in southern Lebanon, particularly south Beirut and the Bekaa valley, it is possible for a visitor to spend a whole week without stepping outside a Hezbollah business unit: the hotel he checks into, the restaurant he eats in, the taxi that takes him around, the guide who shows him the sights and the shop where he buys souvenirs all belong to the party.

This may explain some of the destruction we've seen this week. If Israel has the list of Hezbollah properties, I'm sure they know what to do.

"It has become increasingly clear that the Bush Administration lacks a comprehensive diplomatic strategy for the current crisis. With Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice occupied by challenges ranging from Iraq to Iran to North Korea, the Senators believe someone must begin putting together the pieces of a political settlement."

The militia is said to be armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles and an Iranian rapid-fire gun initially modelled on the Israeli Uzi. The party’s crown jewels, however, are an estimated 14,000 rockets and missiles shipped in from Iran over the past six years. Most of these are modified versions of the Soviet-designed Katyusha. The party also has some Chinese-made Silkworm missiles for special use in naval warfare. "The Israelis would be foolish to think they are dealing with nothing but a bunch of mad fanatics," says a former Iranian diplomat now in exile. "Hezbollah in Lebanon is a state in all but name: it has its territory, army, civil service and economic and educational systems."

how can the world expect there to be any pity or sympathy in the US for Hezbollah?
We remember the bombing at the US Marine barracks in Beirut in 83 very well . We remember Khobar Towers .
As they say payback is a beeatch , and revenge is sweet , especially when aged....
I say we help put them all in the ground.

They left out Israel.

I'm so tired of all this islamic bullsh#t. tired of trying to make it conform to rationality. it doesn't. Israel's intelligence came to this conclusion some time ago: they're nuts, it's impossible to understand them.

Sorta sounds like a marriage I'd heard of once...

Yeah, the thing the author said, I thought he was talking about the army of Jesus when He comes back as described in Revelation 20 in the Bible.

That's a pathetic letter from Reid and Biden to the President. It's right out of Bill Clinton's slick, deceptive tactics from the 1992 election: 1) blame the current administration for all the problems in the world, 2) make vague criticisms but offer no specific alternatives and no alternative plan that could in turn be criticized, and 3) feed this BS to mind-numbed liberal robots in the treasonous MSM who then use it to attack the President. When will these sleazy senate democRATs learn to do what's best for America instead of taking cheap political shots at the President for the short-term benefit of their dreadful democRAT party?

Good article with a very thorough history of Hez.

As for who will set the agenda, I don't think Israel is really interested in doing that. The Muslims hate Israel and make all sorts of wild charges, but Israel is not interested in dominating the ME or doing more than living its own life in peace. Israel is not a superpower and is not involved in much outside its own region.

Iran wants to be a superpower, controlling the Islamic world rather than individual states, and is using Hezbollah as its advance force. We, on the other hand, cannot permit Iran to do this, because controlling the ME also means controlling Muslims, and anyone who controls the Muslim world has a supra-national, aggressive, conquest-driven ideology at their service. In other words, if Iran gets control of the ME, no one is safe in any part of the world.

well, is it splitting hairs or stating the obvious to say that Israel influences the Middle East by spanking the unruly children that inhabit it from time to time? It's a benign sort of influence.

Oh, I agree, it does influence it. I just meant that in many ways, Israel (contrary to Muslim thought on the matter) simply wants to exist and is not out to take on the entire region or make any significant changes except those that will guarantee Israel's safety.

We, on the other hand, represent the opposing force to world Islam, of which Iran considers itself or wants to be the leader. Granted, we have not come out and said as much, but I think that is partially because we are just beginning to realize it and to be able - if not yet willing- to name the enemy. Better late than never, I guess. Hopefully, not too late.
