US Navy ship off Lebanon to take 1,200 Americans
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
BEIRUT, Lebanon

The USS Nashville anchored off the coast of Lebanon Thursday morning prepared to receive some 1,200 Americans fleeing fighting to take them to Cyprus.

The amphibious assault ship prepares for its voyage as the United States and other countries ramp up their evacuation operations from the war-torn country. Early Thursday, some 900 Americans arrived safely in Cyprus aboard a luxury cruise ship the Orient Queen.

Denmark leads the way its nationals out, having evacuated 4,100.

Around 8,000 of the 25,000 Americans in Lebanon have asked to be evacuated.

The vessel was one of several Navy ships that headed to Lebanon late Wednesday to assist with the evacuation.

"Around 8,000 of the 25,000 Americans in Lebanon have asked to be evacuated."

Anyone seen a breakdown of the 25K Americans as to what percentage have dual citizenship, how many are just visiting, how many actually live there full time, etc.?

Converation this morning with one of my smartass buyers who is from Lebanon (and hates Hezbollah):

Me: I didn't catch the news this morning. How are things in Lebanon?

Him: They're GREAT! There's been a high unemployment rate, but Nasrallah's caused the whole place to be bombed and destroyed, so there'll be a lot of work now rebuilding it. Everybody will have jobs.

Me: (laughing) OK, I deserved that. Now, let me re-phrase the question...

What are some good sources for serious talk about what's going on over there? Analysis, background, etc.? There's so much I don't know but I want to learn.

I heard there was a run on dollars, and the banks only have Euros, and Lebanon is printing money to keep up with the outflow from the banks.

A lot of folks dont want Euros, so they are issuing debit cards for the account.

Oh, you didn't miss anything. I'm just a wuss like sofaman says he is, but I don't have a good reason.

I was just worried that something was going to happen that would keep our US evacs from going forward. And when I sit on a live thread, I can't see pings or the other stories of the news of the day. My puter doesn't do well with lots of threads open.

So, I was antsy and just switching back and forth to try to keep up with about 10 different news things I was following, plus this. Wore me out!

USAF has also had three helos operating for three days, which the MSM managed to not report, and C17s arriving to Cypress. I have a feeling they are going to airlift people to Europe or something, as they dont want people in a camp for long....the hotels have been booked.
