Syria tells Hizbollah to stop rocketing Israel

LONDON - Syria is telling Lebanon’s Hizbollah movement to stop firing rockets at Israel in a conflict sparked by the capture of two Israeli soldiers, Syria’s ambassador to London said on Friday.

Hizbollah, an Islamist group represented in the Lebanese government, wants to trade the captives for prisoners held in Israel. In an attempt to increase domestic pressure on Hizbollah, Israeli planes have attacked Beirut and southern Lebanon, killing at least 60 people.

When asked whether Syria was telling Hizbollah to stop firing rockets at Israel, the ambassador, Sami Khiyami, told the BBC: “Of course.”

“This is a movement that is completely independent. We have good relations with it,” he said. Hizbollah was created to fight Israel’s former occupation of southern Lebanon and is backed by both Iran and Syria.

“Syria does not wish at all to be involved in the conflict. It’s really seeking to ease down tensions and to reach a settlement that would stop completely the violence.”

The violence in Lebanon is the fiercest since 1996, when Israel launched a 17-day blitz on Hizbollah strongholds in the south.

“The most important thing today is to concentrate on stopping the violence, on negotiating exchange of prisoners and on devising ways and means to bring peace to this poor Middle East,” Khiyami said.

As I predicted, Syria and Iran are hanging Hezbollah out to dry.

I hope they maintain that stance. I think they will.

Ahmedinejad is running his mouth, but that's all. That's all he ever does.

This thread (with official comments from Syria's Ambassador) should be Front Page news.

You're probably right about that.

Also, I just wanted to let you know that your homepage is great. It's very informative and the whole section about GWB's first 48 months was great and everybody needs to be reminded of this so they don't fall asleep during this year's and 2008's elections.

I also enjoyed the pictures all over your page. Who are the girls pictured under the photo of the rifle? If you say that one of them is your wife, then I can see why you say Life is Good!

"As I predicted, Syria and Iran are hanging Hezbollah out to dry."
yep yep yep. Just prior to you pinging me, I had copied your good analysis from yesterday, and pasted it into a different post by OPS4 on current issue. I do think people should strongly consider what you wrote.
Iran and Syria are not fools. They know they cannot go anywhere positive should either or both elect to do armed combat with Israel. The US forces being embedded in Iraq, the public announcements by the Saudis, the neutrality by Egypt and Jordan etc., is indicative that lots of puppet shows are being played to satisfy different audiences.
There is not going to be any regional war. Only Israel's continue strategic strikes against Hamas and Hisbollah respectively.
Allegra. Don't let your heart be troubled. This crap (Hizbollah/Hamas targeting) is going to die down in a few weeks to a month. Iraq shall continue to stabilize as Maliki and company are pressured to make further deals with the various groups on the line teetering, and a final decision is made on how to silence the fat boy once and for all, and neutralize his militia.

I haven't been discouraged in all the time I've been here (not even in April of '04 when things got quite scary) and I'm not letting down now! ;-)

Iraq remains on track and progress continues. We're finding it kind of interesting to watch a war somewhere else and play spectator for a while.

It was pretty quiet in Baghdad today. We welcome that.

What will be a real riot is if the goons in Baggy Dad see they are not getting all the coverage and simply stop killing folks for the L/MSM. Stay safe.

Hezbollah and Hamas were behind much of Al Qaeda's logistics (e.g. suicide recruits, munitions) in Iraq.

They're currently busy right now, so whatever is left (not much) of Al Qaeda in Iraq will just have to take a number and wait.

That is what I eluded to Allegra in my comment. Meanwhile TF145 are not sitting around all day and woofing down beers.

I was kind of wondering about Israel's county battery fire. I assume the people launching the rockets are probably shooting and scooting but I would think you'd return fire into the general area and maybe catch a couple.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Iran sent Hamas to the mound and Israel quickly scored 7 runs . With no outs and the bases loaded Iran went to the bullpen again for the reliever Hizbollah. Israel lit'em up like a menorah candle and scored another 7 runs including a grand slam home run by Olmert. Olmert was a mid season trade for the injured Sharon, but is proving to be pretty good at swinging the bat after the all star break. With Arafat dead after the last game you would think Abbas and Palestine would improve their game and they already have made a dozen errors each in this game playing for Iran.

........and now the manager Imadipwad goes out to the mound and the crowd begins to shout, "LEVI HIM IN, LEAVE HIM IN, LEAVE HIM IN!" The home crowd wants to see Israel run up the score some more before Iran goes for their closer Syria. Frankly, Syria can't even throw spitballs anymore so it looks like Israel is going to win this with a no hitter. They always have their closer Sampson avialable but he is not even warming up for this game but he is always available.

What the right thing to do would be for Israel to remove Baby Assad from power. That would not stop Iran from fomenting problems, but it would remove one Islamo-fascist satrap from the world scene. That won't happen, but it would be the correct course of action. If we were living in a sane world.
