From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

That sounds like a Rutger Hauer line from Blade Runner: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate."

I hope none of that comes to your neighborhood. Stay safe.

Certainly..But the chances are less of his being harmed by staying in a major hotel in Beirut than by walking near his office in DC which has just called a crime emergency here.

Prayers for your safety and the safety of your family.

What is going on in the Christian Lebanese community?

Not so fast, fatima ... patrick_k is over there as well, but that's becuase he lives there. He has been a FReeper since 2000 and if you peruse his posts, has a perspective on events that we need to hear. For all we know, rebel_yell2 and partick_k might just need each other before this is over.

Please don't overreact to patrick_k's "mislead" statement - I think that is a translation thing. WE jumped to the conclusion that he was another marooned American when he said "it is dawn here." I think our prayer umbrella can extend to cover him too and perhaps we'll get some interesting reports.

Thanks, I'll do.
I did not watch the movie back in the 80's. It was not a suitable time for watching movies. I lived (and survived) the hell of all the war in Lebanon. But you could say it was close between science fiction and bad dream.

Patrick, I have a friend here who survived the war. From the stories she tells me, I know that you have endured much hardship. I hope the good people in Lebanon can overcome the bad ones and make that country the gem that it was before.

Fatima, it was really dawn, sun was coming up. We have a difference of 7 hours in time zone. No heartfeelings at all.

I do find the lack of knowledge of this region exhibited by several Freepers to be mind boggling, however.

I can SO relate to that! I've even had some of them get hostile with me because, you know, they watch the news and all, so they know wo much more than I do about the region and what's really happening.

Be safe and please keep us all posted. You've got a LOT of people from all over the place pulling for you.

I'm a little concerned that we should have heard from him by now. I assume he's okay but his communications line is down. I hope he got his registration filed with the State Dept.

Me too. It's morning there now. It's either 8:30 or 9:30 - I'm not sure if they're one or two hours behind us, but the sun is definitely up in Beirut.

You wouldn't know from watching the news, would you? We are so five minutes ago. LOL

Nothing much has changed here. The scum militias are still trying to stir things up. We're hearing plenty of explosions lately. Baghdad is on its normal Friday curfew today so things are relatively quiet for the moment.

We're all watching Lebanon. Real closely.

How are you?
