A Question of Manliness
The Daily Mail ^ | 7/12/2006 | Martin Newland

Posted on 07/12/2006 10:39:54 AM PDT by Syco

There is, apparently, a resurgence of manliness in America. Superman has returned to the big screen and unshaven, testosterone-charged film stars such as Colin Farrell no longer look socially marginalised.

The A To Z Of Manliness, a compendium of tips on such matters as how to punch properly, is number two on the New York Times bestseller list, while a rash of academic books on the importance of real men have added fuel to the fire. The Boston Globe recently summed up the phenomenon: "We're in the middle of a Menaissance."

It is the atavistic desire to provide for those you love that forms the basic building block of manliness. It has existed since the physically stronger sex travelled the plains in search of meat for the family and it continued until the rise of feminism in the 1960s, a movement which would have us believe that men and women are biological and emotional clean slates, each possessed of identical and interchangeable faculties when it comes to work, life and family.

This is the lunacy that allows women fighter pilots to get aloft even though a man is more effective in combat because his stronger frame better protects him from G-forces. It is the feminist orthodoxy that renders my wife faintly embarrassed when she owns up to being a housewife. It is the notion that children do not need fathers.

The article is pretty good too. Whole thing reminds me of our man John Wayne.

I'm not worried about me. I know who I am and I don't need validation from anybody. I'm a guy and I like it. I worry about my kids. My sons are just entering school and they have to put up with a ton of crap from the Looney Left about alternative lifestyles. I had to explain to my four year old yesterday why he couldn't bring a flourescent green squirt gun to school with him because there are some people who are just paranoid and nutty in this world. I want my sons to be comfortable being guys and it pisses me off that they're being told by so many "institutions" that there's something wrong with that.

And the tag... let's just say it fits me.

I saw that rebuttal letter, and was going to re-rebut it, since she is either ignorant of, or ignoring, the vast amount of research which indicates that much of the behavioral tendencies ARE indeed of an organic nature.

It is fascinating how the left operates, on the one hand, they want to say that boys are boys and girls are girls because they have been RAISED that way, and yet, when it comes to homosexuality, they claim those people were BORN that way. The hipocracy is striking!

After his role and performance in ALEXANDER I wouldn't cite Colin Farrell as an examplar of manliness.

Men in America have become "woman-hearted" and they have permitted political corretness to castrate them - present company excluded.

Carmel is dreaming if she thinks sex differences are all conditioning. My dad was an army air corps drill sergeant for a while and believe me I was not brought up to cry when things went wrong. As an adult (woman), however, I could cry easily and often, without much control over my emotions. With menopause, my propensity to cry disappeared. So I'd say the cause was hormones -- not upbringing.

Send Mr. Newland DVDs of "Stagecoach", "Fort Apache", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", "The Searchers", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "The Shootist". Let him watch them with his kids. Should do the trick.

Manliness - Have another job before you quit the one you have
Machismo - Quit your job in a huff because of some perceived slight by your boss.

Manliness - You see an opportunity to help someone less fortunate than yourself. You take the opportunity and don't make a big deal of it.
Machismo - You help someone out and let EVERYONE know how great you are.

Manliness - Your wife feels, every day, that you appreciate her.
Machismo - Your wife feels, every day, that she's your slave

Need I go on?
There are many differences between manliness and machismo. You may not be able to state them in a cognizant list but you know them when you see them.

Now if we could only get women to start acting like women instead of pretending they can do ANYTHING a man can.
