The Metro north trains are the closest and they are a block away under park. I can see from here that they are unaffected.

There is a subway line a block or two away with a stop at 5th and 60th.

Not terrorism always reported almost immediately.

As long as another building doesn't explode within the next hour I guess we're out of the woods.

1010 WINS newsradio :

An explosion was heard before a fire and collapse at a 3-story building on Manhattan's East Side on Monday, the Fire Department said.

Television reports said people were trapped inside, but fire officials did not immediately confirm that.

Heavy black smoke rose high above the building, wedged between taller structures on 62nd Street between Park and Madison avenues. Damage, including shattered windows, could be seen at one of the adjoining buildings.

The building reportedly housed a doctor's office and a beauty salon.

Streets around the area were closed off to traffic as ambulances and rescue units responded just before 9 a.m.

Witnesses told reporters that they heard a loud explosion, but it wasn't clear whether it was before or after the fire started.

Live report from 1010wins:

32 East 62nd still burning, smoking.
White House just released a statement 'incident was not terrorism-related'.

No disruption of subway BTW.

(Personally I don't know how they can rule this out so quickly, but that's what they say)

Liberals don't want to see Muslims blamed for anything, conservatives don't want to see Bush blamed for anything. Ergo, it's never terrorism - even when it is.

After all the talk about people blowing up the tunnel, I feel sorry for New Yorkers, this type of thing has to rattle them.

But it always seems to me that terrorists are looking for high profile targets, and this building doesn't seem to be one.

Con Ed reports that they were investigating "smell of gas" prior to the blast.

Not to make light of it, but I keep expecting to see Dennis Leary jump from the one building over to the next one. (FX Alert!)

With construction ongoing in the area, I would put money on a backhoe nicking a gas line, a slow leak, and subsequent explosion from a pilot light or spark.

Gas leaks can cause some serious devastation. I investigated one once that resulted in the roof of a single family home being blown completely off and landing in a nearby yard. And all the doors and windows were blown out a considerable distance - the front door was sitting on the curb when the firemen arrived.

Turned out it was a deliberate leak for purposes of arson . . . but that's another story!

Doubt heavy equipment involved, more'n likely a "reno" job. (read; day laborers)

Yes. I'm listening to some being interviewed now. They all said the gas smell was strong.
