how bad is it out there, from what you can see?

do you work at Rockefeller center?

(by the way, I havent been to NYC before, but I knew when I saw 62nd in the headline that it was near my roommate's building. broke out the map and, sure enough, its just about 5 blocks away. his apartment is at 72nd on the west side though. I'm going visit him in about a month...we're roommates during the school year, in case you were wondering how I could have a roommate in NYC all the way from Texas. =P)

Ambulances, rescue units as well as police and fire department officials responded just before 9 a.m.

Streets from the mid 60's to the 50's will be shut down, NewsChannel 4 reported. http://www.wnbc.com/news/9490570/detail.html

"I just viewed the building collapse east of Madison Ave on E 62nd St. A townhouse about 5 stories tall btwn the Links Club and a coop building on the southeast corner of Madison collapsed. There were probably some ground floor offices in the building, typical of the area. Lots of smoke, p'haps a small gas explosion led to it. Building is flattened."

When was this?

When I was a kid living there, c. 1970, we had an almost identical case kill 3 people, level two houses instantly, and badly damage a third so badly it had to be leveled, in our subdivision. The site was on my walk path to school.

I was in school when it happened, and heard it. Dad was in a staff position at the Pentagon at the time, in a slot that was manned 24/7, so he was at home sleeping, and mom and the next door neighbor were in the kitchen having coffee. They went outside, and insulation was coming out of the sky like snow.

I have a lot of respect for natural gas.

This was in Annandale, Canterbury Woods subdivision.

The building reportedly housed a doctor's office and a beauty salon http://www.wnbc.com/news/9490570/detail.html

1. All I can see is the crowd of people being held at the police barricade 1/2 block away. I didn't hear any explosion and have been here since 6:00AM. In truth, you can see more from fox News, but a few co-workers are going over to have a look. I'll report any new data.

2. I used to work at Rockefeller Center, and that's 15 blocks south from here. Now I'm at 59th and Park.

3. Your roomate's place is a little over a mile away across central park....quite a distance by NYC standards.

Not that I am an expert on the subject but perhaps we should give our gas companies and appliance manufacturer's some credit for designing equipment that basically works?

Also, the people that install them?

Not trying to start an argument here. Just pointing out that we do things pretty well in the USA.

God help the people in that building.

FoxNews reporting that the Pentagon is reporting that the explosion was 'no sign of terrorism'.
