FReeper Canteen ~ Tell Us About Your Military Service ~ July 6, 2006
Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge | 06 JULY 2006 | Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge

Posted on 07/05/2006 7:04:50 PM PDT by Old Sarge

Army?

Navy?

Air Force?

Marines?

Coast Guard?

Why did you choose that particular branch?

Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?

What is the name of your unit? (Division?)

What is their (your) mascot?

Tell us how much you loved your DI!

How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant? How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you?

Your first landing on an aircraft carrier

Your first parachute jump

The heaviest vehicle you got to drive

The largest weapon you got to use

Did you serve before email?

Did you have a personal nickname?

It is our pleasure and honor to be here for our Troops, past, present and future...
and especially during this Week, the 4th of July we remember that we owe our freedom to you.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and God bless you.

A gentle reminder from Ms.B:
Please, no politics in The Canteen.
The Troops need a place to rest, relax and relate, and that place is The Canteen.
Have fun and play nice!

I entered the US Navy in 1981 in the Nuclear Power Program. I attended bootcamp in San Diego, CA and Machinists Mate "A" School in Great Lakes, IL. While waiting to go to Nuke School in Orlando, FL I was temporarily stationed onboard the USS Vreeland (FF 1068).

I graduated near the top of my Nuclear Power School class (8302) with a 4.5 average grade, and continued my nuclear power training at the S8G (Trident) submarine prototype in Ballston Spa, NY. After initial prototype training I attended Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT) school (also at Ballston Spa).

From there I was sent to the pre-commissioning crew for the USS Henry M Jackson, but my orders were almost immediately changed to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). I served on the Ike from 1984 until 1987 when I was transferred to the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) where I served until my EAOS in Feb of 1990.

I entered the Naval Reserve upon my EAOS, and was assigned a reserve billet with NMCB (Naval Mobile Construction Battalion) 5, and was deployed to Saudi Arabia with them from Sept 1990 until April of 1991.

My first landing on an aircraft carrier was when I was flown via Sea Stallion helo from the deck of a supply ship to the deck of the Ike off the coast of southern France during a mistral.

My first parachute jump was when some Nuke School "buddies" talked me into taking sky diving lessons when I was stationed in Orlando.

The heaviest vehicle I got to drive was the USS Theodore Roosevelt (approx 100,000 tons). I was standing a helmsman watch completing my Enlisted Surface Warfare qualifications while underway in the North Atlantic.

The largest weapon I got to use was my fist after being jumped by some unsavory characters while on liberty in Lisbon Portugal. I won.

I did serve before email

My personal nickname "Chief"

approx 100,000 tons
Ding, Ding, Ding!!!
Gotta be a winner here!
I thought mine was heave (at 48,000 lbs), then another tank driver hit it at 70,000 lbs, but I think you've taken the trophy!

Cordially,
GE

That would be WAY too cool!

I've got to ask this,
When you guys are underwater, how do you keep from running into something?
I guess I'm use to control signals in the air, but it seems that H2O would attenuate the signals so much that they would be useless?

Can you "see" so to speak, what is in front of you?
