Navy?
|
Why did you choose that particular branch?
|
Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?
What is the name of your unit? (Division?)
What is their (your) mascot?
Tell us how much you loved your DI!
How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant? How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you? |
Your first landing on an aircraft carrier Your first parachute jump The heaviest vehicle you got to drive The largest weapon you got to use Did you serve before email? Did you have a personal nickname? |
It is our pleasure and honor to be here for our Troops, past, present and future... and especially during this Week, the 4th of July we remember that we owe our freedom to you. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and God bless you.
A gentle reminder from Ms.B: Please, no politics in The Canteen. The Troops need a place to rest, relax and relate, and that place is The Canteen. Have fun and play nice! |

Thank you. It's become something of a family joke (after 30+ years, of course it would.) But I still appreciate it.

The Merchant Marine in WW2 was awarded Va benefits. I was hoping they would extend that to us that served in the Viet-Nam sea lift. I took a number of trips over there. The only good thing was that we got double pay while in the war zone. We also got shot at on occasion.

It's something to see, just how fast Navy deployments take you every-darn-where.
They decommissioned overseas? I thought they brought the vessel back home first?

It was a funny one there, we gave it to the Turks sans ammo.
All of us on board got to fire every last gun we had until nothing with gunpower was left aboard -- big guns, machine guns, and every kind of hand gun.
Then we donated it and flew away to our next assignments, I went back to the gun line on the USS Kitty Hawk.
The Turks used the ship to invade Cyprus.

1. What branch of the military do you or did you serve in?
USAF 1968-1972
2. Why did you choose that particular branch?
Blue is my favorite color? I preferred a plain uniform?
3. Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?
Amarillo Air Force Base
4. What is the name of your unit? (Division?)
481st Tactical Fighter Squadron, 27th Tactical Fighter Wing, Cannon AFB, NM
5. What is their (your) mascot?
The "Aardvark" because our squadron had F-111s
6. How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant?
By the first hour I had his parentage worked out but I probably overestimated his bloodline.
7. How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you?
Hmmmmm....Still contemplating this.
8. Your first landing on an aircraft carrier.
Was only ever one one AC but walked up the gangway to get there.
9. Your first parachute jump
2000 when I retired. Oh you mean "in the silk?" Never, thank goodness.
10. The heaviest vehicle you got to drive.
In the Service it was a Coleman MB-(?) Aircraft Towing Tractor (4-wheel drive and 4-wheel steering). It was very similar to the MB-4 shown here but bright yellow with AF decals and reflective tape all the fenders.
11. The largest weapon you got to use.
M1s and M16s during basic training but later handled most of the armament of the F-111.
12. Did you serve before email?
I served before the alphabet.
13. Did you have a personal nickname?
Only my DI (or TI as we called him in the AF) had a nickname for me and I shouldn't repeat it in mixed company.
14. Other
I enlisted in 1968 and served as an F111 crew chief and maintenance chief. I also gained significant experience with the old F-100 "Lead Sled" (and this is not a Ford truck). I left after a single tour the AF as an E5 (Staff Sergeant). It was an outstanding experience which could not have been gained anywhere else.
