Mexico election too close to call (exit poll released)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential election is too close to call between a leftist anti-poverty campaigner and the conservative ruling party candidate locked in a tie, a respected exit poll said on Sunday.

The extremely close vote raised fears of a political crisis if any of the main candidates challenge the results and call street protests.

Pre-election polls had showed Felipe Calderon of the ruling party and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing former mayor of Mexico City, in a virtual tie. Exit polls from Mexico's two main television station and the El Universal newspaper said they could not declare a winner.

El Universal said the race was between Lopez Obrador and Calderon. Neither of the TV stations mentioned Roberto Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.

The Federal Electoral Institute was expected to announce official results at around 11 p.m. If it is unable to call a winner, Mexico could face days or weeks of legal wrangling and protests similar to the fight that followed the U.S. presidential election in 2000.

Screw exit polls. Only the real numbers matter.

If I understand well, Mexico City is inside what's called "Distrito Federal" ("federal district") but it spilled over an State that's called too México, that surrounds the D.F. except for a segment where the D.F. has a border with the State of Puebla.

Another factor: Mexico has a porous southern border with Central America, which is in EXTREME poverty.

Note that most of Calderon's support comes from the northern half and the Yucatan, which are the most prosperous parts of Mexico. The southern part is Obrador country.

Ehem, sorry, State of Morelos, not Puebla. The States of Puebla, Hidalgo and Guerrero are on the same zone.

And closer to VZ - Hugo has had his minions working the southern part of Mexico on Obrador's behalf, to such an extent that the Mexican govt even filed a formal protest.

Very much so. The north is also relatively rich (not at US levels but well above world average), the south is Third World country.

Yep.

The best thing for Mexico is a strong leader who has some ideas about how to make Mexico prosperous.

Fox was neither and bent to the feudal aspects of the Mexican society too often.

"Mexico's presidential election is too close to call between a leftist anti-poverty campaigner and the conservative ruling party candidate locked in a tie, a respected exit poll said on Sunday."

Judas priest, they pack in all the bias they can right off the bat, don't they? 'Anti-poverty campaigner' as opposed to the evil 'conservative ruler.' Baron Reuters is probably spinning like a top.

LOL! Worth a second read :) Great comment :)

The most pro-Obrador place is actually the Federal District where he is leading 2:1 (370 thousand vs. 185 for Calderon). In the rest of South, he's only leading by 5-10%.

Here is a projected result speadsheet thingie assuming each of the five regions keeps doing what they are doing (the precentages are only of the three party vote, so they will be a bit lower in actuality, but proportionally lower, with the relative spreads the same):

   Calderon Dinosaur Socialist
0.421633438	0.203790594	0.374575968

That's the urban leftism that has spread across North America...both the US and Canadian elections saw such as well.

Mexico's Constitution limits a President to a single six year term. He is constitutionally ineligible to run for re-election.

(The Palestinian terrorist regime is the crisis and Israel's fist is the answer.)

It would also be a nightmare for the Hollywood liberals to have nowhere to escape to with conservatives in power both north and south...they'd better know how to swim!

If they can't handle the heat....

But they can be liberals, TRUE liberals, not the leftists we are currently stuck with.
